The Experiential Dream Group

The following example of selected portions of a dream depicts the process of dream work based on the Ullman and Limmer model (1987).

“I was a kindergarten teacher in a classroom with little children. Things were going smoothly. We were all getting along. Then there was some kind of change. Some of the children began to get unruly. I couldn’t control them. I was pointing my finger at them and scolding them. A little black child, her hair in braids, said: ‘No, I don’t have to do what you want.’ She started to walk to the door. I grabbed her arm and said: ‘No, you can’t leave.’ At that point an obese black woman came in. She seemed perplexed by all the confusion. Then she became a music teacher. She handed tambourines to all the children. I relaxed and felt that I didn’t have to do anything anymore. The children were happy with her and started to sing a Beatles song, ‘Back in the USSR.’ I turned to see my daughter in the group. I tried to make eye contact and said excitedly: ‘That’s the Beatles song.’ Another little boy said: ‘Yeah, that’s the Beatles.’ ”
