Six

“ D id you use the whole bottle of bubble bath?”

Jarred from her soaking stupor by the deep tenor of Aidan’ s voice, Corri looked up to find him standing in the open door, leaning against the frame, a paper cup clasped in one hand. He looked like the answer to all her feminine fantasies— clean-shaven, immaculately combed hair, long-sleeved untucked black polo and jeans. He could walk right into a model shoot on the downtown New York streets without anyone questioning his presence. He could get into the tub with her and she wouldn’ t mind a bit.

Apparently she was quickly becoming a lost cause where he was concerned, and she needed to stop that now. Or in the next few hours or so.

Corri reached for the washcloth, lifted her leg from beneath the bubbles and bathed her thigh. “ I used only half the bottle.” When she met his gaze, she noticed his eyes had definitely darkened. “ Where have you been?”

“ To get this.” He stepped inside the room and set the cup on the vanity. “ Coffee, two sugars, a lot of cream.”

“ Just how I like it.” She leaned forward and bent her knees to her chest, her body still concealed by the snowy mounds.

Aidan took a seat on the second step leading to the whirlpool and pushed aside a random strand of hair that had fallen from the clip. “ I know what else you like, too.”

He’ d proved that to her twice last night. “ You were gone for quite a while. How many blocks did you have to walk to get a cup of coffee?”

“ I went downstairs to the restaurant. I had to meet with someone.”

Someone was rather vague. “ Friend or former colleague?”

“ Tamara.”

“ Oh.” That one word held a world of disappointment that Corri couldn’ t conceal. “ What did she want?” As if she didn’ t know. Most likely she’ d been pleading her case for a reconciliation with Aidan.

“ She wanted to tell me she’ s engaged.”

That she hadn’ t expected. Things were suddenly looking up. “ Why didn’ t she mention that last night?”

“ Because I didn’ t ask her. I told her congratulations, and then I left. It took about ten minutes, tops.”

Don’ t ask, Corri. “ Were you disappointed to hear that?”

He shook his head. “ Not in the least. Tamara deserves a man who can give her what she needs. I’ m not that man.”

Corri experienced a strong sense of relief, and also a touch of wariness. He might not be the man she needed, either. But she couldn’ t concern herself with that now.

She sank down into the bath and sighed. “ I really wish I had one of these tubs. Talk about a stress reliever.”
