He continued along the main road, which was sign-posted to Die and Valence. It would be asking for trouble to follow the Opel along an empty driveway with no exit, most of it probably under observation anyway. The last thing he wanted was to tip off Strakhov that he was being followed.

A quarter of a mile along the road he stopped the Citroen beneath a row of poplars and climbed a bank with Konzaki's field glasses. Across the rolling upland he saw the Opel, beetle-bright in the sunshine, moving along the trail beside a field of ripening corn. Beyond the field was a wood, and rising above that a limestone cliff about 150 feet high.

Bolan swept the binoculars right and left. The trail ran right up to the cliff and—it was difficult to see because young trees grew between the rocks there—but, yeah, a cleft divided two great masses of limestone, and the road ran right into a natural defile splitting the face of the escarpment.

He adjusted the focus. The cleft was in deep shadow but the red Triphium light source brightened the gloom, threw the image into sharper relief.

Bolan could see that the crevasse ran only a short way before it was blocked by a wall of rock.

Through this inner face a tunnel had been blasted.

At the mouth of the tunnel two heavies, armed and uniformed like the hardmen outside the vacation' camp, stood between a gatekeeper's but and a barrier pole. On the cliff top far above, two other men stood guard.

The Opel paused by the shack. The pole rose. The car moved forward and was swallowed up in the blackness of the tunnel.
