As soon as Charlotte got home, she started looking into the Facebook profiles of the two people Katrina had given Robert Hubbard’s name and address to.

Angus made himself useful by preparing lunch. That was becoming a habit even in her home. He was a good cook, and although it was fairly simple food, Charlotte liked it, and also the fact that he made it for her. He always made well-balanced simple lunches: none of the pretentious or strange foods some of her friends ate.

She sat at the breakfast bar with her laptop, looking into the profiles and surreptitiously watching Angus cook.

She jumped when her phone rang.“Charlotte,” said Helena.

Charlotte smiled. “Hello my love, how are you?”

“I have very bad news,” said Helena. “You no like it.”

Charlotte’s heart sank. She wondered if it was about her two sons, or whether her investment banker had lost money. Yet lately, her investments had been doing remarkably well. As for her sons, they were deep in study at university, and they’d both messaged a couple of days ago. She frowned. “Just break it to me Helena. I’d rather know.”

“You need have look at email I send you. It your bastard ex. He new Viper in Vipers’ Nest.”

Vipers' Nest was a hugely popular TV programme where multimillionaire entrepreneurs were pitched by business startups. They invested their own money, and a string of successful companies had been born out of it.

“Vipers’ Nest? I love that show!” Charlotte opened her email, and found Helena‘s message. She clicked the link, which opened an advert on Facebook, and pressed play.

The video started with the Vipers’ Nest logo and a large question mark. Then a voiceover said, “Who is the new Viper?” Then an image of Idris, her ex-husband, appeared. He was smartly dressed in a dark suit, a bright light behind him making him look angelic. The camera panned and he smiled directly into the lens. He folded his arms with a smirk and the voiceover continued. “Idris Beavin, multimillionaire tech entrepreneur, takes over as the new Viper. Will he be impressed by any of the startups bidding for his money?”

The scene changed to a close-up of him talking to a startup bidder, “You know, you remind me of my ex-wife. She always thought she was right too…” He laughed.

The video finished with a shot of Idris sitting in the Viper’s Chair, with a huge pile of cash beside him. “The new series starts next week: Tuesdays, Channel Two, 8pm.”

Charlotte was speechless.“You okay?” said Helena, eventually. “Why they take on such bastard I not know.”

“I didn’t think I could hate him any more than I already did.” Charlotte managed to say.

“I knew you no like it. You need time process. Remember, I’m here if you need me.”

“I’ll call you back.”

Angus walked around the breakfast bar and looked at the laptop screen just as the video started again. Charlotte didn’t want to see it again, but she thought she might be in a horrible dream. Sure enough, it was her ex-husband Idris.
