Chapter Eleven

Molly changed clothes in Beth’s bathroom. Thankfully that meant she didn’t need to face a full-length mirror. She would hate her appearance. She never wore this style of skirt, and the blouse swallowed her up. Someone had erred when they applied the size tag.

Beth guided Molly to the elevator and surprised her by giving her a solemn hug. “Be safe.”

Molly smiled reassuringly. “You, too. Maybe some time we’ll swap origin stories.”

“I’d like that.”

The elevator opened and Molly climbed inside, waving goodbye. Her smile faded when the doors closed. Sixteen, maybe younger, and the girl already had an arch-enemy. No happy endings lay down such a path.

Her cell phone chirped. Sean’s number appeared there. “Feeling better?” she quipped.

“Awake, and I’ve had something the department claims qualifies as coffee.”

“Ah, the glamorous life. What’s up?”

“Not my metabolism, that’s for sure. Your pal nearly escaped a few hours ago.”

“I’m not surprised.”

“Thankfully neither were we. We’d set up an extra set of guards. You’ll find some dandy black eyes on the entire morning shift, but The Grim Detective didn’t feel like breaking any bones this time.”

“He must be softening in his old age.”

“I read it as him testing us. He’s pretty sure he’ll have another chance.”

Molly figured he’d assessed the situation correctly. “You could try sedating him.”

Sean snorted. “The last three guys who tried ended up unconscious, despite both his arms and legs being shackled.”

“You dodged his punch. You could probably do it.”

“I hate needles.”

She could hear the tension returning to Sean’s voice. Time to change the subject. “Did you call the kennel?”

“I did, and you won’t like it. We could only track down two nephews. Neither of their apartment complexes allow pets.”

She climbed into the waiting cab. “That stinks.”

“How’s Smokey?” He had the voice of a man trying to make a sore subject sound like no big deal.

“Don’t let him sucker you into a game of blackjack. He deals from the bottom.”

“You’re cute.”

She tilted her phone away from her. “The Amma-Zonite Embassy, please.”

The cabbie regarded her blankly.

“Venusa’s headquarters.”

Recognition dawned, and the cabby put the car in drive.

“Are you in a cab?” asked Sean.

“I am.”

“Then I guess you went to the city, and you can’t tell me how you’re getting along in your investigation at the moment.”

“Correct.”

“Is it good news or bad news?”

“Mostly no news. Sorry.”

Sean groaned.

“Don’t you already have your man?”

“I’m seventy-five percent sure I do, but seventy-five percent doesn’t qualify as beyond reasonable doubt.”

“Do you want to meet me when I’m back in town? I can catch you up.”

“If I can get away at all. Call me.”

“Will do, and Sean?”

“Yes?”

“You’re cute, too.”

“I’m hanging up now.” He didn’t sound annoyed, only tired.

Molly took a deep breath, trying to digest what she’d learned today. Byron’s coma had ended, Simon evidently couldn’t afford voicemail, and Beth had told her secret identity to most of her extended family. She had nothing helpful, except for where Simon had gone after the attack. That could be meaningful. It could also be nothing at all. She’d have to talk to him, assuming she could ever get a hold of him.
