Chapter 20

I stayed conscious on my way to the ground, seeing the shocked face of the cop nearest me as I folded into myself and went floppy. Nothing worked beyond my internal organs and my eyeballs. I soon wished my eyes didn’t work either as the cop started toward me, cautious because surely this was a trick. He got hit from behind by a fizzing red bolt of hellfire. It threw him forward, his head and body slamming into the wall of the pub with a crunch and a clatter as he bounced off and came to rest on the floor facing me, his sightless eyes seeing nothing. Nathaniel had killed him. I could have shouted a warning, but my mouth didn’t work.

I heard a similar set of noises behind me and assumed the other cop was also lying dead. Screams and cries of horror let me know the crowd had finally woken up and were dispersing in a panicked, frenzied manner. They were leaving me behind to fend for myself and I was glad for it – I didn’t want anyone else getting hurt.

As the street emptied, feet appeared in the small section of the world I could see. ‘Incantus,’ murmured Nathaniel from above me and instantly all my sensations returned. I closed my eyes, now finally able to do so, and I levered myself off the cold paving slabs so the dead cop wouldn’t be the first thing I saw when I opened them again.

Closing my eyes also stopped me from seeing one of the Uglys as he reached down and grabbed the front of my jacket. He yanked me upright to hold me off the ground before I could stop him and held a hellfire powerbomb ready in his free hand in case I tried something. From the look on his face I doubted he was ready to forgive me for taking him out twice this afternoon.

‘You have caused me some embarrassment, young lady,’ chided Nathaniel as if talking to a child. ‘Familiars should not revolt. Now I will have to demonstrate that you are my servant and you will not like that. When we get back to hell, you are going to go before Beelzebub and the grand council, and you will make me look good or I will show you ways of suffering that you have never imagined.’ As threats go, he scored an eight or maybe even a nine. I didn’t like the sound of anything he proposed which was probably the point and I couldn’t see how I was going to blast my way out of this given that they knew to be wary of me now.

Dangling from Ezekiel’s fist, I could see over Nathaniel’s shoulder, so I caught the distant shimmy of air that always preceded an arrival. I wasn’t sure who to hope for, but I got something new when the latest figure stepped through the portal and onto the pavement.

He had long flowing dark blonde hair and a matching beard, my messed-up memory told me he looked a bit like one of the Bee Gees.
