Chapter Sixteen

Rose

Wednesday

“It’s been six months. You can’t keep this up. We can’t keep this up,” he said, his voice deceptively calm. Still, as she rocked Evette in her arms, she could sense the accusatory tone to his voice.

He’d come home at lunch with a smile on his face. She’d been standing in the living room, looking out the patio doors as she rocked the doll. It felt so good to have her in her arms. Her Evette. Hers.

She’d turned to see him, the fitted suit on his body and the confident smile on his face. He’d beelined for her and kissed her cheek. He’d loosened his tie and tried to grab the doll from her. It had been clear what was on his mind—but she was surprised. The middle of the day? After everything? Her body tensed. It’d been so long.

She’d clutched the doll tighter to herself. “Joshua is home,” she said in a hushed whisper.

“And we have our own room with a locking door. He’s sleeping, isn’t he? We’ll be quiet. And quick.” He again reached for the doll. She’d stepped back, out of his reach, where she humbly aboded for months now. She’d stared up at him as his face fell.

Now, she felt her chest heave as he said the words. Six months. Six fucking months. Had it only been that long? Some days, it felt like a lifetime. Sometimes, it felt like it was yesterday that she’d collapsed with it all.

Regardless, sex was the last thing on her mind. The very, very last.

“I’m sorry,” she said now, half meaning it. “I just can’t. There’s too much.”

He sighed audibly and stepped back, turning his back to her. She turned to look out the window. But she gasped when, in a few quick, angry strides, he was right next to her cheek again.

“You have to move on. It isn’t fair to either of us. I know it’s hard, but it’s hard for me too, dammit. I’m trying here. Are you?”

She could not bring herself to turn and look into those eyes for she was afraid she would see what she didn’t want to see.

The eyes of a desperate man, a man ready to give up.

She stared into the forest as he breathed heavily beside her. The words of her father echoed between her ear and the glass.

“Once a cheater, always a cheater. That man’s a scoundrel. What are you thinking?”

She’d been pissed at him then. Had sworn to choose Thad over everything. Now, though, she thought with a harsh slap in the face from reality, that her father was right.

Scoundrel.

Cheater.

Cheater again?

She rocked the doll as he stomped away. It wasn’t fair. He’d been through hell and back, too. And just because he got back up quicker, just because he was standing again—it wasn’t fair to hold that against him, was it?

She wanted to fall into his arms like old times, to promise to love him better. She wanted to beg him to be patient for a while longer, to swear to him she’d get better.
