Chapter Sixteen
Rose
Wednesday
âItâs been six months. You canât keep this up. We canât keep this up,â he said, his voice deceptively calm. Still, as she rocked Evette in her arms, she could sense the accusatory tone to his voice.
Heâd come home at lunch with a smile on his face. Sheâd been standing in the living room, looking out the patio doors as she rocked the doll. It felt so good to have her in her arms. Her Evette. Hers.
Sheâd turned to see him, the fitted suit on his body and the confident smile on his face. Heâd beelined for her and kissed her cheek. Heâd loosened his tie and tried to grab the doll from her. It had been clear what was on his mindâbut she was surprised. The middle of the day? After everything? Her body tensed. Itâd been so long.
Sheâd clutched the doll tighter to herself. âJoshua is home,â she said in a hushed whisper.
âAnd we have our own room with a locking door. Heâs sleeping, isnât he? Weâll be quiet. And quick.â He again reached for the doll. Sheâd stepped back, out of his reach, where she humbly aboded for months now. Sheâd stared up at him as his face fell.
Now, she felt her chest heave as he said the words. Six months. Six fucking months. Had it only been that long? Some days, it felt like a lifetime. Sometimes, it felt like it was yesterday that sheâd collapsed with it all.
Regardless, sex was the last thing on her mind. The very, very last.
âIâm sorry,â she said now, half meaning it. âI just canât. Thereâs too much.â
He sighed audibly and stepped back, turning his back to her. She turned to look out the window. But she gasped when, in a few quick, angry strides, he was right next to her cheek again.
âYou have to move on. It isnât fair to either of us. I know itâs hard, but itâs hard for me too, dammit. Iâm trying here. Are you?â
She could not bring herself to turn and look into those eyes for she was afraid she would see what she didnât want to see.
The eyes of a desperate man, a man ready to give up.
She stared into the forest as he breathed heavily beside her. The words of her father echoed between her ear and the glass.
âOnce a cheater, always a cheater. That manâs a scoundrel. What are you thinking?â
Sheâd been pissed at him then. Had sworn to choose Thad over everything. Now, though, she thought with a harsh slap in the face from reality, that her father was right.
Scoundrel.
Cheater.
Cheater again?
She rocked the doll as he stomped away. It wasnât fair. Heâd been through hell and back, too. And just because he got back up quicker, just because he was standing againâit wasnât fair to hold that against him, was it?
She wanted to fall into his arms like old times, to promise to love him better. She wanted to beg him to be patient for a while longer, to swear to him sheâd get better.
