13. Dinah

At the same moment that Jordan opened her mouth to scream, Madison tried to get to her feet. She placed a hand on Jordan’s back and squashed the air from her lungs.

“Who is that?” Madison asked, as Jordan struggled to get away from the weapon.

“Stay here,” the figure commanded. It had a deep, female voice.

Jordan almost collapsed in relief as the tip of the sword swung in the opposite direction. The figure sprinted toward the squat imps. She didn’t slow, didn’t stop, even when she met the first creature. Her blade swung down, cleaving the creature’s head from its body. She plunged the sword into the belly of another. It came away clean. A ring of blue flame surrounding the weapon lit the alley up like a torch.

Jordan lay on the ground, watching the woman slice her way through the pack of imps. It was eerily quiet. There was only the dull thunk of metal meeting flesh and bone. A shiver ran through Jordan’s body.

They’re dying, but they aren’t making a sound.

An icy calm settled over her. It was a stark contrast to the heat she felt when the imps appeared. She knew she could destroy them all, she just had to focus. Her muscles felt fine; her vision cleared. Rising to her feet, she took a step forward, searching the ground for something she could use to send these little devils back to hell. Back where they belonged.

Something grabbed her ankle. Jordan looked down to see Madison looking up at her with an odd expression on her face.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Madison hissed. “Are you trying to get yourself killed?”

The desire to fight left Jordan as rapidly as it had appeared. She stumbled, put off-balance by Madison, who was still tugging on her. Her eyelids drooped, and although her brain was telling her body that it was a terrible idea to pass out, her body wasn’t listening.

Her legs gave way, but instead of hitting the ground, she fell into someone’s arms. A large green eye looked down at her. Jordan blinked. There were two now.

“Owen?” she asked them.

“You’re going to be fine,” he told her.

She shook her head. “How do you know?” she asked. “What’s happening to me?”

“I’ve got you,” he said, in the same soothing tone. “Everything’s going to be all right.”
