You Get Paid What You Work For
“If a man performs no more service than that for which he is being paid, then obviously he is receiving all the pay to which he is entitled.”
—Hill
Hmmm. OK, first of all, if you are in leadership for the money, my best advice for you is to get out as quickly as you can.
Let me clarify that. Of course we all work to earn a living and provide for our families, as we should. However, if you are in “leadership” for personal gain only, it will be an uphill climb all the way and reaching your full potential will be extremely difficult.
Success in leadership takes much more than the list of things that your boss tells you to do. Doing just enough to get by will never be enough to be an effective leader. Over the last couple of years we have talked about many of the things that it takes to be a good leader, and I hope to talk about more of those things. There are characteristics and qualities; there are skills and practices that are required to be a good leader.
Well, if it takes so many qualities and so much work, what motivates us to do all that? That brings me back to my first statement. Money just isn’t the right kind of motivation for true leadership because true leadership requires strength in matters of the heart. You have to care about more than yourself. You have to want to make a difference in the lives of others and in your organization, and doing just enough to get by won’t make much difference, will it?
Here is another thought: if you are only doing “just enough to get by,” you will only ever make “just enough to get by.” It doesn’t matter who’s fault it is or isn’t. That is simply a basic truth, that 99 percent of the population can’t get around.
