Chapter 7

Basement dwelling doesn’t suck

It took three car trips and plenty of cussing from Zandra, but we moved the boxes and trunk into Vorana’s cozy, white-washed basement.

It surprised me how comfortable it was. There was a big rug covering most of the concrete floor, plenty of space for tucking away the boxes and containers, and the pull-out bed was pleasantly soft. I’d spent several minutes kneading it and checking each section for maximum comfort. It was a suitable place for my witch.

And I already liked Vorana. She smelled of ink, paper, and chocolate and had a laugh that made my tail twitch with pleasure. She’d make an ideal companion for Zandra. She was older and could be a steadying influence. That was providing Zandra let her in. She was always cautious about making friends.

I blamed her upbringing. Of course, I hadn’t been around when Zandra was young, but I’d witnessed enough of Adrienne’s messy parenting to know it made Zandra cautious to trust.

“Hey, you lazy old thing, you can’t sleep on that sofa bed all afternoon. We need to figure out what’s going on with Adrienne.” Zandra flopped onto the bed and tickled my head.

“I’m not sleeping. I’m testing the comfort factor. You don’t want a bad back by sleeping on anything uncomfortable.”

Zandra lifted me and settled me on her shoulder. “What’s the rating?”

“I give it a four out of five. Of course, if we’re staying long term, we might want to invest in more pillows and a few soft comforters.”

“We’re not.”

“You’re still planning to go back to Willow Tree Falls?”

“That was always the plan.”

“Rethink it. It’s time we try something new. I like Crimson Cove. We should stay awhile.”

“You’d miss the fishmonger.”

I hesitated. That was one great thing about living in Willow Tree Falls, but it was a sacrifice I was prepared to make. “We can find fish anywhere. And the beach isn’t so far. I could always catch fresh.”

Zandra huffed out a breath, her hands gentle as she stroked me. “Living in the same town as Adrienne isn’t the greatest of ideas. When she gets back, she’ll never leave us alone. And she’ll always be tossing problems at us. You really want that?”

“Maybe she’ll be more settled when you’re both in the same place. Adrienne thinks she needs a reason to make you visit her. And she worries about you cutting contact with her.”

“I don’t buy that. When I visit, she talks about herself incessantly, and if I tell her my problems, she flips it around and makes it about herself. She never bothers to ask me if I’m happy or if I need any help. Why will that change because we’re living closer?”

My witch had a point, but I didn’t like to think of her giving up on her family, even though Adrienne was a difficult woman to love. There was truth in the saying you couldn’t pick your biological family, though.

If Adrienne became too much of a problem, I could find my witch an extended family. One she wasn’t related to by birth.
