Chapter 12

Poop showers

“Come on, buddy. This cage has your name written all over it. Back at animal control, there’s food, bedding, and a safe place to sleep. And we have sanctuaries. We’ll find you the perfect place where you can chill, fire off your magic, and no one will stop you.” Zandra spoke gently, her hands out.

Her persistent encouragement wasn’t convincing the sparkly red panda with the white stripe on his back, who was huddled in a damp, muddy hole. We’d been chasing this stubborn critter for hours. We were tired, I had several magic burns to deal with, and the panda had used a gross shower of poop to cover Zandra in a less than fragrant odor. I also had a dollop of poop on my tail. It stank.

The panda bared his tiny pointed teeth at us. “Danger.”

“There’s no danger coming from us,” I said. “I trust my witch to do the right thing by all familiars. Where is your bonded magic user?”

“Gone. Missing.” The panda was so panicked he could only use single words, his frantic black gaze shifting around, looking for an escape.

“We’ll help you find him, but you can’t stay out here on your own. It’ll get cold soon, and you’re frightening people with your unstable magic and poop showers.” I lifted my once pristine white tail to show him exactly how nasty they were.

“Back!” Another shower of panda poop got flung at us.

Who knew such a little guy could be so prolific in the pooping department?

“What if someone thinks you’re a danger and hurts you?” I inched closer to the panda. If I had to, I’d subdue him by force.

“Back! Back! Back! Danger. Pain. Taken. Go.”

“No, we’re here to help. And we’re going nowhere. Not without you.”

The panda lunged at Zandra, but I was quicker than this fluffy bundle of red rage. I grabbed the panda’s scruff in my teeth and wrapped my legs around him. He was bigger than me, but I was stronger and had more motive to succeed. If he got hold of Zandra, she’d be covered in something far worse than panda poop.

I couldn’t be certain, but this critter was tainted with something dark. The magic he’d hit me with still stung and throbbed through my bones, so I wasn’t letting it touch Zandra.

“Excellent. Hold him, Juno. That’s it. You’ve got him.” Zandra zapped the panda with a light sedation spell. He struggled for a few more seconds, but his magic weakened, as did the blows he rained on my legs with his hard little paws.

It took another minute of tussling before he admitted defeat. He sagged against me, his breath heaving out and his grip slackening.

“This guy is a bundle of anxiety. What a state to get himself in.” Zandra stood over me and the slumbering, drooling panda. “He was terrified of us. And what was he talking about? It sounded like his bonded magic user is missing.”

I rolled away from the snoozing panda and shook out my fur, dislodging the clump of drying poop from my tail.
