Chapter 13

Damning evidence

Cythera was slumped in the seat behind her desk, her tired gaze flitting around her office. “This confirms it. Roland put in a noise complaint on the night of the murder. He described seeing two drunken rough types entering the house Carlito and Bael have been squatting in.”

I was perched on the edge of her desk, which Cythera never approved of, but she seemed so preoccupied that she didn’t complain.

“Roland said Carlito and Bael didn’t leave the house that night after they got in.” Zandra sat in a chair on the opposite side of the desk. “I took a good look at his notepad, and he records all his neighbors’ movements. He must sit by the window day and night watching their comings and goings.”

“It’s not the information we wanted, but we can’t ignore it,” Cythera said. “We have to discount Carlito and Bael as suspects.”

“Are you letting Bael go?” I asked.

“I can’t keep him any longer. I’ll get someone working on his release paperwork, but he’s not getting away with fighting us or destroying my wedding board.” She stood and strode out of the room, her shoulders slumped.

“Juno, what are you doing?” Zandra glanced over her shoulder to see where Cythera was as I crept across her desk.

“I want to speak to the eyewitness. We need to hear his story.” I rifled quickly through the papers on Cythera’s desk. There were several reports on boring strategy improvements, but I quickly located the file for Doyle’s murder.

“You’d better hurry. Cythera will toss you out if she catches you snooping.”

“It’s not our fault Cythera isn’t sharing all the information.”

“Perhaps Brodie doesn’t want her to. He’s supposed to be in charge.”

“Yet, he’s vanished. Most likely working to ensure Finn looks guilty.” I pushed aside more reports. “We must see the witness.”

Zandra kept watch at the door. “Cythera’s probably worried you’ll interrogate him and force him to change his mind.”

“He’ll change his mind if he’s lying. Here it is. Rembrandt Flicker. I don’t know him. Maybe he’s a new resident in Crimson Cove, like Roland?”

“We’ll look into it. Make sure those papers are back exactly as you found them, or Cythera will know you’ve been poking around.”

I carefully set everything back in place and was back on the edge of the desk when Cythera returned.

“There’s no point in either of you hanging around,” she said.

“We do need to get to animal control,” Zandra said. “We’ve spent all morning on this, and Barney will be wondering where we are.”

“Go. I’ll keep you informed if I have any news.”

We hurried through the office and out the main doors. When we entered animal control, voices drifted out of Barney’s office, so we headed in that direction. Barney sat behind his desk, and Ember Dreamscape and Sammy sat in chairs on the other side of the desk. They wore serious expressions, although Sammy chirruped a greeting when he saw us.

Barney looked up as Zandra tapped on the door, and he smiled a greeting.

“Sorry we’re late. We were following a lead in Finn’s investigation,” Zandra said.
