Chapter 11

Booked!

There were three thrift stores in Crimson Cove, one of which specialized in old books and crumbling maps of long-expired magical realms. That was where we found Robin.

He had several hardback books tucked under one arm and was flicking through another with his free hand. Robin wore a tailored navy-blue suit with a white shirt underneath. He looked professional and in-charge handsome if you enjoyed admiring the clean-cut business type.

“Old Mother Splinter liked her hotties.” I was perched on Zandra’s shoulder as we stood outside the store, watching Robin browse.

“Juno, I’m certain that’s not politically correct,” Finn murmured.

“I’m making an observation. I doubt she’d have been seen with a man who had an excellent personality but a face like a squashed turnip.”

“He’s model good-looking,” Zandra said. “So is Harlan. And Old Mother Splinter...”

“Was an aging crone?” I said.

“Well... she could have been Harlan’s mother. The age gap was huge.”

“It’s a power thing,” Finn said. “A woman with influence is super attractive.”

“And the money. Let’s not forget the oodles of cash.” I tucked my tail around Zandra’s neck to keep her warm.

“Let’s go see what Robin has to tell us.” Finn yawned as he pushed open the door into the thrift store, and we headed over to Robin.

An enormous wicker basket containing balls of wool momentarily distracted me, and I felt the urge to dive into it and roll around. I gently hissed at myself. I had to get my cat urges under control. When I had a moment, I’d tackle the elusive bangle I’d recently discovered that had, so far, refused to release my magic back to me. Once I had that missing part back, I’d feel more in control and less likely to want to shred a ball of wool to pieces. The thought of wool clamped between my teeth made me drool. How humiliating.

Robin looked up as we drew near. “Finn! I was planning on visiting Angel Force this afternoon to get an update on the investigation.”

“Then I’ve saved you a journey. I’ve got more questions about Old Mother Splinter.” Finn made the introductions.

Robin set down the books he held. “Of course. Anything to help.”

He sounded just like Harlan. Old Mother Splinter had her boys well trained.

Finn glanced around, but other than us, the place was empty, although noises from the back room revealed the owner’s location. “We have concerns that her death wasn’t an accident.”

Robin’s expression grew serious. “So I understand. I went to the hospital first thing and got an update from the doctor who treated her.”

“How could you do that?” Zandra said. “You only worked for Old Mother Splinter.”

“True. But we used to be married.” Robin examined his bare ring finger. “Well, we still are. We never got around to the divorce.”

“Why didn’t I know about this connection?” Finn said.

“You never asked. But it’s no secret. She always called me her assistant, but I was more of a business partner. When we were officially together as husband and wife, I’d help on the business side.
