CHAPTER 18

When I arrived at my desk on Monday morning, there was a voice message from Dwight Perry asking me to call him. I punched in the number he’d left and he picked up on the first ring. “Detective Graham,” I said.

“Detective, thanks for returning my call,” he said. “I wanted to let you know; my brother’s been to see me.”

A tinge of excitement bolted through me. I said, “When?”

“Last evening,” he said.

“What did he want?”

“Can you come by the house tonight? I’ll explain everything.”

I hoped this was the break I needed and was eager to hear more.

“I’ll be there by seven,” I said.

Dwight Perry lived with his wife and son in a colonial-style home on a quiet suburban street in Elmhurst, Queens. The house was painted white with green window shutters. The entrance door was an inviting blue. Several brown spots dotted the front lawn. It needed work. There was a large white oak tree beside the front walkway. In the driveway sat an older model Ford Fusion. It also needed work.

I parked the Chevy at the curb in front of the house and walked up to the front door. The letters on the doormat read: THE PERRY FAMILY. A strange juxtaposition considering the idea of Lester Perry, I held in my mind.

The sun had set behind the abundance of trees that surrounded the house. The porch light and a row of LED lights that lined the walkway to the front door dispelled the darkness.

When I pressed the doorbell, the door opened moments later by an attractive woman I presumed to be Mrs. Perry. I put her to be in her mid-forties. Her hair was a deep gloss black and pulled back into a ponytail. She had a healthy tanned complexion and her eyes were large and almost as black as her hair. She was wearing a white sleeveless sundress and white sneakers.

She didn’t offer a smile when she said, “Detective, Graham, please come in.” I could detect uncertainty and consternation on her face.

She closed the door behind me as I stepped into a large living room. I immediately felt the warmth of the ambiance. There was an enormous brick fireplace at the far wall set between two floor to ceiling windows. Framed photos of the Perry family decorated the mantle.

Mrs. Perry offered me a seat as she headed for a nearby staircase. “My husband will be with you shortly,” she said. Without another word, she disappeared up the stairs.

I took a seat in an armchair. My eyes were drawn to several framed prints hanging on one wall depicting snowy mountains, rivers, trees, and green meadows. A large overstuffed sofa sat atop a rectangular area rug over a polished wood floor. Two end tables, a coffee table, and two armchairs were placed in front of the sofa. A polished mahogany piano completed the furnishings. It was a room where one might want to sit by the flames of the fireplace on a snowy night and read a good book.
