Ezra’s eyes fluttered open when the sun streamed through the two walls of floor-to-ceiling windows in the penthouse. He should have closed the shades before he went to sleep but he hadn’t. He’d only had enough energy to shower and fall into bed. He hadn’t even eaten or turned on his computer to go over the paperwork for today’s meeting, because he couldn’t get Candace’s words out of his head.

I waited for you.

We can’t go back.

Happy New Year, Ezra.

He’d slept terribly. He’d spent most of the night trying his hardest to figure out how he’d gotten the past almost two decades so wrong; how he’d misunderstood someone he thought he knew so well. None of it made sense and his jetlagged brain and broken heart couldn’t figure it out. He turned away from the window and threw the covers over his head. He just wanted to go back to sleep and dream about Candace, conjuring that scene at the airport. An alternate version where she’d gotten into his car and talked to him, listened to him, a version where she said, “happy new year,” not as a final goodbye but with laughter.

His phone chimed and he grabbed it out of habit. He sat up quickly when he saw Mei’s name in his messages.
