I shuddered.

Sonya was standing and held me. I thought of my family back home. I thought of Fannie's wish earlier. “What's at the citadel for us?”

“For some, a new home, for others, a career, the rest they'll have to find a place for themselves, they always do.”

Sonya added, “Some come back to a village just like this one.”

I sniffed between sniffles, “You are human.”

“One of the few and the proud,” she puffed up.

“So not many then?”

“Nope. I'm one of those lucky enough to survive the trip.”

Thinking of Fannie again, “It’s hard to live among monsters?”

She looked at me like I was crazy, “Um, there are dangers sure, but I meant, um... the red fog.” She ended her sentence low and fearful.

Red fog... “Huh?” I managed unthoughtfully with a sigh.

Blue smiled, “On your bus, there was a fog, red and everywhere.”

“Oh that fog.” I brightened, oh those delicate touches! “With the swirling around like a feather boa? That fog?” I sighed happily, “That was something! What of it?”

Sonja was staring at me oddly.

Blue stammered, “It usually means bad things.”

“It’s a trap, by them.” Bob said.

Blue countered, “You think it’s made by them.”

I shook my head, that didn’t make sense, I felt its touches enough to know it was alive, at least it acted like it was. “It does? It was soft. I was thinking I'll have to get dinner from it first next time it felt me up. I... was it the thing that changed us?” I joked. Half joked.

Bob said with clear irritation, “What? No.”

Sonja gasped horrified.

I balked, my good cheer apparently wrong. “I, I... what did I say wrong?”

Bob patted Sonja, “I'm sure she didn't mean it like it sounded...”

Sonja wide eyed and cold told me, “It’s a true monster, most humans and even some weaker Changed ones don't survive it. It can and does shred travelers into meat slices.”

I choked.

“It’s why usually there are only one or two humans per twenty changed here.”

I was felt up by that? And enjoyed it!? What did that make me? I shuddered, “I may throw up now.”

Blue was behind me massaging my shoulders. “You didn't know, it’s okay.”

“I'm going to go take a shower...” I thought to get up to go but Blue kept me in my chair with his gentle rubbing.

He whispered in my ear, “If this gets too much, tell me and I'll stop.”

I was enjoying his rubbing, it was nice. His statement got me wondering though, did he know too that sometimes I got, out of control. I blushed, how embarrassing. Wait, what if they all knew? I opened my mouth to ask, but the question got caught up in more blushing so it never got out.

I took a drink and felt a bit better.

“I'm sorry Sonja, I didn't know. I'm such an idiot, I'm not even sure... I'm not sure about anything here. The rules...everything.” I was going to cry in front of these strangers...

She hugged me and Blue sat down, my shoulders missing him. I smiled at him he eyeballed me like I might attack him or something.
