Meet the Mobster

“Do we know each other?” I returned Walter Stolly’s scrutinizing gaze and searched for something familiar in the man’s face.

If we’d met in this life, I would have remembered. The oily sensation that swept over me was too hackle-raising to forget. Plus, he’d called me Zosia, suggesting any encounter had occurred in a previous cycle. Which was only strange because he was not a fanged member of the undead. Walter was a living, breathing fae.

“Do…other?” he repeated, throwing his head back and laughing like a hyena. Winter’s father turned to Essie and cocked a thumb in my direction. “It’s as if she doesn’t remember at all.”

Essie’s nostrils flared. “Stop messing with the girl, Walter. Even you have more class than that.” She hobbled forward and claimed one of the chairs facing his desk.

He shook his head and flashed her a grin, though I noticed a red flush creeping beneath the black ink on his neck.

“I’ve missed you, Essie. These days, everyone around me acts like I shit gold. You know what? It’s boring.” His eyes flicked behind me, to where Avery stood by the elevator waiting for a dismissal. “You can go.”

She scurried out of the room, clearly relieved she didn’t have to stay and witness the family squabbles.

Walter’s gaze landed on me. “Well, are you going to sit?” He eased back in his chair, brows raised in invitation.

“I’m not sure yet,” I admitted.

He did not frighten me, though I had no doubt he was a very dangerous man. It was more that his magic felt heavy and sluggish, like it coated my skin and clogged my pores. I preferred to remain as far from that energy as possible.

“Smart girl,” Essie and Walter said in unison, which was possibly the scariest thing that had occurred in days.

I inched forward. “I came, as you requested. Are you going to help us rescue Winter?”

Walter threaded his fingers behind his neck and leaned back in his chair. “You look exactly the same as the last time we saw each other. I’ll give you a hint. London. The Earl’s Corner Pub. 1892, I believe.” He arched an eyebrow. “Ring any bells?”

“Walter Anthony Stolly.” Essie shook her head. “The Children of Infinity took your only child. Do you really feel tormenting Zara is the best use of our energy?”

His jaw worked back and forth. He clearly did not appreciate the scolding, or maybe it was the insinuation he wasn’t concerned about his daughter. Either way, he’d gone from cackling at my expense to intensely serious in the space of three seconds.

My feet carried me another few steps forward. “I don‘t remember that. You might be lying, but it doesn’t matter. I don’t really give a shit regardless. Help us find Winter, then you can tell me all about the pub and whatever else you like. Hell, maybe you’ll even want to explain how you’ve been around longer than Essie and still possess a heartbeat.”

Walter leaned forward. “Let’s get one thing straight. Freeing Winter from the Infinites is my top priority.
