Chapter Eight
It was snowing the next morning, just not enough to cancel school or even stick. So, I had on my warm boots with my new running shoes in the backpack for gym. I also had on a light sweater shirt, black jeans, and my winter coat as I braved the elements. When I was phased I couldnât feel the cold, but when not phased it was damned cold out. I couldâve flown to school to avoid it, but I wouldnât abandon Maeve to face the trial alone.
Okay, that was a little melodramatic, my point was it was really cold out that Monday morning, but I was kind of enjoying the flurries.
Maeve asked, âWho else is going skiing with us?â
I blushed, âI didnât ask, Iâll let you know later.â
Maeve frowned, âYou donât think heâs trying to set me up with a friend, do you? I mean he asked for me by name, not just a friend.â
I shrugged, âNo idea. He does know weâre best friends. He did say cars, so it wonât be just him and one other either. Having second thoughts?â
Maeve shook her head, âNo, I want to go,â then she changed the subject, âDid you catch the news this morning? The fire and lightning supers have been suspended, for starting that fiasco last night with the vigilante.â
It was a bit amusing, but smart, to talk about me in the third person even when alone, when referring to my alter ego. I mean, it was doubtful, but who was to say there wasnât a cloaked probe nearby? The super teams had hundreds of them around the city keeping an eye on things.
It was also a level of care that made me feel a little paranoid, but given they were after me it just made sense.
âHadnât heard that yet, no. For violating procedures?â
Maeve nodded, âYes. The mayor is also angry and feels they probably put her in danger by instigating violence. Sheâd saved her daughter and were peaceful, then they gave the vigilante reason to retaliate.â
âI bet it was a shock.â
Maeve snickered, âThink she was tempted to respond?â
I laughed, âAbsolutely, I wouldâve been.â
Maeve grinned, âWhat do you think she wanted to do?â
I rolled my eyes, âNo idea. Not hurt them, but she couldâve embarrassed them. I hope the kid is alright, that mustâve been confusing for her. What if he is setting you up?â I asked, circling back around.
Maeve sighed, âIâll go anyway, and deal with it.â
âUnless heâs cute?â I suggested.
She waved that away, dodging the question, and I let it drop.
We continued chatting on the way to school, which I wonât reiterate further, just basic conversation and high school drama.
Several rather normal days passed which Iâll just lightly go over.
There were two more minor incidents I got involved in, basic rescue work, and in both cases I hadnât bothered to get my suit on or to reveal myself just like with the building collapse on my date. I just stayed deep under the earth.
I did learn thereâd be eight
