Now they both stood in the center of the room in front of Balesir, with Vannik and Hotha at their back.
Balesir angrily glared at her. He stood before the large fireplace with his arms across his chest and his feet planted firmly apart as if waiting for a fight. His bald pate shined with sweat and looked a little red in the flickering firelight. Balesirâs blue eyes glittered as he stared silently at her.
To avoid Balesirâs gaze, Ryn glanced quickly at the Dymarki beside her. Freidren stood stiffly, eyes glued to her clawed feet. She had the look of someone who had been caught thieving and was ashamed to have her parents know of it.
Ryn felt a twinge of guilt. It was her fault that they were in trouble. Freidren had warned her about going there and she had ignored her. Rynâs eyes also slipped to her feet and stayed there.
âI donât know what to say to you,â Balesir finally said. âI am sure that Freidren would have told you that the Hall of Wonder is a sacred area where only the initiates of the Hall can go.â
Ryn nodded weakly in response.
At the mention of the Society of the Hall of Wonder, Freidren looked up sharply.
âThey wonât be told, will they?â she asked Balesir, but turned to glare at her brother.
âThe Society has a right to know,â Hotha replied. âThe doors need to be cleansed and sanctified. Only a society member can touch the doors.â
âBut you can do that, Hotha, you and Patha. The others do not need to know. If they knew, they will not allow me to become a member.â
âYou should have thought of that before leading The Outsider there.â Hotha looked down sharply at his sister.
âIt was my fault that she did,â Ryn cut in.
âDid you drag her kicking and screaming? Did you beat her until she said she would? I think not. She made her own choice. She must live by it,â he said with a note of finality.
Ryn opened her mouth to say more, but Freidren shook her head.
âHe is right,â she said reluctantly. âI must face the consequences of my actions.â
Ryn turned quickly to Balesir.
âIt was all my fault. I asked her to show me around Zardaharn, and I made her take me to the Hall. She warned me, but I didnât listen to her.â
âThat is the point, Ryn. You donât seem to listen. We speak, but you do not hear us,â Balesir said angrily.
âI hear you, loud and clear!â Dagan spoke suddenly in her mind. Ryn quickly told him to be quiet. Suddenly she heard Balesirâs mind voice murmuring to Dagan, and they both retreated to wherever they go when they did not want to be heard.
Ryn shook her head.
âI know,â Ryn said in exasperation, âItâs just⦠it all seems unreal to me. Sometimes I know things are happening, that the Brotherhood is after us, after me. Other times I just cannot believe it. Why would anyone want to kill me? Iâm only a girl?â
Balesir sighed and uncrossed his arms.
