The first phone call with Scarlett was rough.

Raina had been in contact with her over the past year, so she knew about Kenton’s death, but hearing it from me brought a kind of finality to it. Or so she said.

I told her the details of what he’d said the night I impulsively proposed to her beau. That he loved her, and they had simply met too soon. I’m not sure it helped very much.

At least they were smart enough to enjoy the time they had together, unlike Lorcan and I. Looking at him sends a sharp pang through me every time. Since his return, he appeared to consider himself back on duty as my protector.

I’m not sure how to dismiss him without offense. Besides, I need his services. There is no more royal guard, apart from him.

“I hope it’s okay that I had the school put the things you left behind into storage. Your computers, books and clothes. It’s all boxed up and ready to be shipped whenever there’s a way to get it to you,” Scarlett said.

“That was so thoughtful of you.” It made me feel like someone out in the world cares what happened to us. “I have a few other things to ask of you.”

Briefly, I give her the rundown of what I was hoping to accomplish. Scarlett asked what happened to Lorcan.

“He’s alive,” I said curtly, darting a glance at where he stood a few feet away. Close enough to listen. Raina had told her about the accident, so there wasn’t much I needed to say. It still felt awkward. “He doesn’t remember me.”

Scarlett was quiet for a minute. “Holy shit, Zosia. At all?”

“Only the bad parts, as I understand the situation.”

It’s too hard to look at him, much less try and talk to him. Feeling his gaze on my back made my chest tight and hot, and my eyes itch with unshed tears. The man I loved is gone.

The issue was our passports. As in, mine was gone, destroyed in the scramble to get home that evening and subsequent battles. So were Lorcan’s, and Raina’s. We can’t travel anywhere without them, and we have no way to make new ones, with the old passport office burned to the ground. None of us are getting off this island again until they can be replaced. Not without a special dispensation, which, to my disappointment, limited my marital options substantially.

Scarlett agreed to reach out to Princess Hallie and see what could be arranged in terms of meetings. Hallie’s father had many wives, by whom he had a ridiculous number of sons with no hope of ascending to the throne. I was honestly shocked to learn that her father only became king after killing off half his family.

I should probably have backed out of the plan at that point. But then, what would I do? Instead, I asked Scarlett to ask Hallie to find the best combination of royal, wealthy, and egalitarian possible. Royal was optional. Wealthy and egalitarian were not.
