CHAPTER 15
“Excuse me?” I asked as I sat down next to him on the bed, hoping I had heard incorrectly. “Their own night stalker? Why do that when there are tons of them out there? What would they possibly do with it? I doubt it would be anything good.”
Jack stayed near the door, his ear against the wood as he listened for anyone who might wander by outside the room.
“If you’re asking about Arkwright, you already know damn well that they’re not interested in doing good.” He pushed a strand of silver hair away from his forehead. A drop of sweat trickled down his temple. “They are only interested in power and profit. What they want is a night stalker that is already completely beholden to them.”
“Why would they want that?” I asked.
“I have no idea.” He stared down at the floor and shook his head. “Maybe they’re just trying to muscle out the competition. Maybe they are just a group of mad scientists trying to make their own Frankenstein’s monster. I haven’t the slightest clue what their end game is.” He looked up at me, a tremble in his brown eyes. “But whatever it is, it will make them the most powerful group in all of the Dusk.”
I gave the man a sideways look and studied his face. His gaze met mine. Well, as well as anyone’s did. He was clearly scared of me, but he was making an effort to be forthcoming.
“How do you know all of this?” I asked. “Did you work for Arkwright?”
He shifted uncomfortably on the bed. “Sort of. But not directly for them.”
A quick movement at the corner of my eye. Jack pressed his right index finger against his lips, with the other hand pointing to the hallway on the other side of the door.
“What is it?” I whispered.
Jack held his palm toward me and shook his head.
Footsteps padded past the door and faded away. Jack waited several seconds longer, then lowered his hands. “I think we’re good.”
I nodded and turned back toward our friend.
“What does that mean? How do you sort of work for Arkwright?” I asked.
“I worked for them, but mostly I worked for another company that wanted to know what they were up to.”
I scoffed, standing up, and then paced back and forth along the wall. “You’re a damn spy.”
He flinched a bit. “Please, keep your voice down. That’s a crude way of saying it, but yes. Before the Breach, I was at Arkwright, observing their operations and reporting to my own employer.”
“And you stayed after the Breach?”
“For a time. I saw enough of what they were working on. My employer, however, did not survive the newly arrived apocalypse, so the paychecks stopped flowing. Once that happened, my incentive for staying diminished. Arkwright paid me as well, but their research terrified me.” He ran his hands through his hair. “I never thought that they would get there, but I did not want to be a part of that process.”
“And they just let you leave?” I cocked an eyebrow at him.
