While we rummaged through the mostly unwrapped culinary gift baskets stacked in my dad’s walk-in pantry, I told Ashley about my visits to the developer’s office and City Hall. “It’s almost like they’re both hiding something. Aside from what you and your mom have experienced with Grant, what other rumors are going around in regards to other people getting railroaded into selling their property?”

“Only Seth North selling some acres last year. But if you drive out east of town, it looks like several parcels aren’t being taken care of and the trees are dying.” Ashley picked up three boxes of couscous and put them in a brown paper bag. “It makes me wonder if the owners sold to Grant and he’s letting the produce trees die before he bulldozes it down.”

“I’ll take a drive and write down the locations, then visit City Hall and see if I can find out the owners.”

“Go about a mile past my house and turn left on Silverwood. You can’t miss it.”

“Do you feel up to telling me what upset you earlier today?”

“I probably overreacted. It was part anger and part sadness, knowing we’re going to lose our property.” She wrinkled her nose. “Grant showed up first thing this morning and told us he was changing his offering price to thirty percent less than he originally offered. He said something about market values. Blah, blah, blah. I think he found out how desperate we are.”

“Can you sell the land to him at that price?”

“Not at all. The only option will be bankruptcy, and we’ll be left without a roof over our heads.” Her face turned a splotchy red. “My mom has worked hard her entire life. She’s mortified about failing on her loan, and I’m angry this person is trying to take advantage of her situation.”

“No wonder you’re upset.” My mind whirled, wondering what I could do to help her out. I couldn’t think of anything. “What are you going to do?”

“I have no idea. Mom’s planning to discuss it with a local real estate agent and see if they can come up with a solution.”

“I hope they figure something out.” I really wished I could come up with something that would help my friend and her family.

She spun around and almost knocked over one of the dozen jars of red pasta sauce sitting on the pantry shelf. “Oops. Trust me, this food will see us through for a couple of months. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.”

“Let me find a cardboard box for the sauce.” I gestured at the six bottles of local organic olive oil and six bottles of balsamic vinegar. “I’ll take three bottles of the olive oil to use in my shop. You can have the rest.”

“I’ll take two of each. That’ll last us at least a year or more. Seriously, these women need to be a little more creative than this if they want to get his attention.” She reached for a package of gourmet orecchiette pasta. “There must be fifteen packages and look at all these varieties of sauce.
