Also, different environments and populations will require a different emphasis. For example, supervisors in inpatient facilities working with severely emotionally disturbed individuals will be required to be very directive and involved in close monitoring of supervisees’ actions with clients, whereas those in school settings or in situations where paraprofessionals provide home services will of necessity need to be able to support independent functioning and a loose structure of monitoring. Naturally, all supervisors in crisis situations are expected both ethically and legally to take a more directive approach to supervision, even if supervisees are highly experienced.

DON’T FORGET

Supervisors should try to achieve a balance between their own preferences and those of the supervisee.
