Chapter

Twenty-Three

Could they be talking about the king? My mind tumbles through thought after thought as I race through the pathways. So what Orion said is true, though I didn’t have cause not to believe him, I suppose. The Corathian people are finally seeing how mad their ruler actually is.

In my hurry, I nearly stumble into a wandering guest. “By the spirits, my apologies,” I say, steadying myself.

I recognize this man as one of the lords who pulled Orion aside before. He’s drunk. Very drunk, stumbling toward me.

“Well, well, well,” he slurs. “What is the prince’s prize doing out in these parts of the gardens alone?”

I look around. Spirits be damned… where is Samson when I need him?

“Please excuse me,” I say, trying to step around him.

He blocks my path. “I support my prince, as I support the crown in all their endeavors, but surely you’d like to see what a real man can do.”

His breath reeks of sparkling wine and dark liquor as he grips his half-hard arousal through the fabric of his trousers.

I hold back a gag while my feet take a cautious step back. “Sir, I suggest you continue walking.”

“What are you going to do to me?” He takes another jagged step toward me and snakes his hand around my wrist, the diminishing bracelet digging into skin and bone with the force of his grip. “You are powerless against me.”

“Funny you should say that.” With my essence, I urge the brush around us to grow, and arms of vines reach out and slither around this arrogant ass’s body. “You thought the prince would leave me without the ability to protect myself with the likes of you around? That this would be your chance to take advantage? You are the one who is powerless against me.”

Surprise turns to fear as his eyes trail behind me. “Your Highness, thank goodness you’re here,” he cries. “I was just walking down the path when your pet unleashed her terror on me.”

I don’t turn to meet the prince’s gaze. Instead, I hold this lord in his stance, tightening my grip before finally releasing him. My vines creep back into the shapes of the bushes they once were, but the lord stays locked in place, completely unmoving.

The prince steps forward next to me, eyes glaring as red as the rubies in my crown. Hidden runes along the inside of his coat light in activation, and I recognize the signs. They’re associated with the Reader ability, allowing him to control the actions of others.

Anger and rage paint his face. The lord would cower in fear if he could, but the prince holds him in place with the power of his runes. All color leaches from the lord’s face.

“Talet, you pompous ass,” he starts. “I can smell the lies pouring out of you just as I smell the stench of alcohol on your breath. You are blinded by your privilege. If you so much as touch her or anyone else again against their wishes, I will take much more than your title.
