A week later…

“Dad, I like staying at your house.”

Esko glanced at Carmelo who was sitting in the passenger seat. Their week together had come to an end and now he was having a hard time locating Persia. He’d been calling her since the night before to ask what time he should drop Carmelo off but there had been no response on her end.

“I love when you come too. Aye, try to FaceTime your mother from your iPad.”

Carmelo unlocked his tablet and tried to call Persia. When the unavailable icon appeared on the screen, he pressed the red button.

“Mama didn’t answer.”

A red flag arose in Esko’s mind. He already had his suspicions about her role in the robbery and now she wasn’t answering the phone. Esko headed to her house and when he arrived, he noticed her car wasn’t in the driveway. Since he still had a key, he allowed himself inside.

“Persia!” he called out.

“Mom?” Carmelo hollered.

When it was determined she wasn’t home, he decided to drive to Persia’s grandmother’s house with hopes that she was there.

“Look, there’s Abuela!” Carmelo spoke with excitement.

“Go see if your mother is in there.”

Carmelo got out the car and ran up to the house. He gave Persia’s grandmother a hug before going inside. While he waited, Esko’s phone vibrated in the cup holder.

“Hello?”

“Well if it ain't the money man on my line.”

Esko chuckled. “Hakim, I know if you calling me, you trying to do business.”

Hakim was Onyx’s father. He was a well-known businessman in Goode City and also the councilman.

“Always. How are you?”

“I'm straight. What’s up with you?”

“You know my life is busy since being in the office, but I have a proposition for you.”

“Talk to me.”

“Do you think you can stop by my office? It won’t take long.”

Esko glanced at the time on his AP. “Yeah, I’ll come.”

“Alright, I'm at the downtown location. I’ll see you then.”

“Yep.”

As soon as he hung up, Carmelo ran up to his window. “Mama’s not here.”

Esko heard feet shuffling toward him. He looked up and noticed Persia’s mother coming up to his car.

“We haven’t heard from Persia all week. Where is she?”

“How would I know? I don’t keep up with her ass.”

She scoffed. “You should know where she is. She’s the mother of your son.”

“And?” he retorted. “That don’t mean I keep tabs on her ass. It’s her week to get Melo and now she’s nowhere to be found.”

“Well, you leave him here with me.”

“Hell no.” Esko shook his head. “Last time I tried to get my son, you wouldn’t even answer the door. Nah, I'm good.”

“Persia told us not to let you in since you had disrespected her.”

“First off, she was cappin’. Secondly, what does that have to do with me getting my son? Y’all too fucking petty, and I'm not about to fight y’all to get my kid. So, no, he ain't staying. Melo, get in the car.”

Persia’s mother glared at him before mumbling under her breath and storming away. Carmelo got in the car and put on his seat belt.
