Harz Mountains

2:25 PM, Tuesday, June 10, 1631

Father Domingo Salazar, priest and inquisitor of the Ordo Praedicatorum, the Dominican Order, looked out at the burning ruins of Schierke and the bodies splayed out on its streets and smiled. These heretics thought to evade the judgment of God, and now look at them. Let each and every one of them rot in Hell as they kiss the ass of their master Satan.

Salazar's smile widened as he saw the carts and loaded mules that moved down the road, transporting iron and silver ingots. God has provided me with the resources to continue His holy work. Soon, soon we will destroy all of these Lutheran heretics and bring these people back to the pure light of Christ's Holy Church!

He kneed his horse to follow the wagons and departing troops, ignoring the cries of the women being dragged along. Soon enough, he thought, those sluts will be brought to heel.

Salazar kicked his heels and brought his horse up to the last wagon. He looked at the contents and wondered. It seemed to be a shrine to St. George, but . . . He could not put his doubts into words even in his own mind. The spear they had found matched the triptych of St. George but, somehow, in the pit of his stomach, it didn't seem right. Maybe it is a relic, he thought, but maybe not. Either way, these heretics don't deserve it.

Salazar and the company of Tilly's troops he was with wound their way out of the Harz Mountains towards the Thuringian plain.
