Chapter Thirteen

Tiber

Stone Whiteplume lived north of Prophet. It was an eleven-mile drive—the last seven of it on a pitted gravel road. I could only hope my GPS wasn’t hopelessly confused. But when I arrived, I knew I’d found the right place.

The gravel driveway was set on either side with posts topped with large, flat rocks. The rock on the left was painted with a sun symbol in red and the one on the right with an eye in black. I paused my car at the driveway. I’d always found the shamanistic traditions on the Navajo rez fascinating—but also a little frightening. I recalled one man, a Navajo witch, who my grandmother feared so much that she would not allow his name to be spoken in her house.

And this cabin was way the hell out here, as the saying goes, “no one would hear you scream.” Mr. Whiteplume might not take too kindly to inquisitive strangers. Especially if he had a murder to hide.

Why had I come? And why had I come alone?

From what Gabriel had told me about his visit to the rez yesterday, he hadn’t gotten anything meaningful from Orson Travis—other than an admission he had hired a shaman. It didn’t sound as though Gabriel had the authority to probe any deeper into the matter. Yet the unease in my gut said there was something here, that the attack on Billy hadn’t been purely random. And, unless we could prove it, the wolves were in danger.

I also couldn’t deny I’d driven out here this morning because of Jeff. I’d felt itchy in my skin since waking up. Even the animals hadn’t been able to snap me out of it. Had Jeff left town? What if he hadn’t? What if he came knocking at my door? The safe haven of my little house no longer felt secure. And I hadn’t wanted to go into town and run into him there. So checking out Stone Whiteplume had appealed.

Frying pan? Fire?

I shook my head. Screw that. Mr. Whiteplume was just a man, an elder. And maybe I’d learn something that could help Gabriel. Help the wolves. How much of a coward would I be if I didn’t try?

I drove my car between the sun and the eye.

The trees cleared after a few yards, and the driveway ended at a small log cabin. It was old but well-maintained, with a narrow porch holding two rocking chairs and a round table. There were four sturdy pine steps leading up to it and a satellite antenna on the roof. A small garden of herbs and vegetables was positioned to the left of the cabin, in an area cleared to get full sun. On the other side was a penned area with a dozen chickens and a chicken coop. Smoke drifted from the chimney on this cool October morning.

I stopped the car and got out. It wasn’t until I approached the porch that I noticed other things—bundles of herbs, feathers, and bits that might be horn or shell tied all along the roof over the porch.
