Chapter Thirteen

“Are you all right?”

Lorcan glanced at Eric and forced a smile onto his face. “Yeah. I’m fine.”

Eric frowned at Lorcan then turned his attention back to the road. “I thought we’d agreed on our two rules for relationships.”

Lorcan bit the inside of his cheek. Eric had a point, but the nerves swirling through his body felt so ridiculous he didn’t want to share them. Maybe if he steered the conversation in a new direction…

“So, you like how your car is handling on its first drive outside the city?”

Eric made a disgusted sound before answering. “She’s a pleasure to drive. Thank you for asking.” He slowed down at the toll booth and handed his money over to the lad behind the glass, facing Lorcan again as he pulled away. “Now that we’ve got that out of the way, tell me what’s wrong, please.”

Lorcan knew he should have known better—Eric could be like a dog with a bone when it came to getting his way—and he sighed while he considered how to word his concerns. When his granny had first said she wanted to meet Eric, Lorcan had been delighted. Even when he’d called her back to set the date, he’d been over the moon at the thought that at least one member of his family was interested in knowing more about his life than just the bare facts. Now that they were on their way to take her out for dinner, though…

“I’m not even sure,” Lorcan admitted while studiously staring at the passing countryside rather than Eric. “I’m nervous but I can’t put my finger on the exact reason. I mean, it was my gran’s idea to bring you to meet her. It’s not as if I’m forcing her into a potentially uncomfortable situation without her consent. Quite the opposite. But knowing that doesn’t stop the nerves.”

Eric stayed silent for long enough to add to Lorcan’s worries and he studied his boyfriend. His gaze was fixed on the road and a slight frown had formed on his forehead.

Lorcan desperately wanted to find out what Eric was thinking but was reluctant to ask in case he wouldn’t like what he heard. As he continued watching him, Eric’s brow smoothed again and he smiled.

“I keep on forgetting everything we do together is a first for you,” Eric said. “I know exactly what you mean. I remember the first time I brought a boyfriend home. I had no doubt he would be made welcome. I was certain my family would be their charming selves and I was a nervous wreck regardless.”

“Yes,” Lorcan said, relieved that he wasn’t as weird as he’d thought, “that’s it exactly.”

Eric nodded. “You realize it shouldn’t matter and yet it’s important to you that she’ll like me, and I her.”

“Yes, that!”

“It never stops completely, I can tell you that much.” Eric glanced at Lorcan and winked. “I’m glad you didn’t notice, but I really wanted my family to like you, too, when we went there to collect my stuff.”

Lorcan stiffened.
