Chapter Ten

« ^ »

To die, to sleep;

To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub;

For in that sleep of death what dreams may come

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil…

—William Shakespeare, Hamlet, act III, scene 1

The plane hit the runway a little too hard, but Connor barely noticed. Landings at Reagan Airport in Washington were often less than elegant, especially in bad weather.

“Geez, it’s pouring,” said Laura, peering out the window. “Ducks could drown in this.”

“Forecast says more rain tomorrow.”

“I’m sorry, hon. That’s going to make it harder, I know.”

Connor shrugged and tucked the paperback she’d been reading into her shoulder bag. As soon as the seat belt light went off, she stood up and opened the overhead. She and Laura had only brought small carry-ons. They only planned to be in Washington for forty-eight hours or so, just long enough to attend the wake and funeral of Amanda Hawthorne.

Within an hour, they were on the George Washington Parkway headed into the city. Connor’s cell phone rang. For the next minute and a half, she was uncharacteristically terse, answering the caller in monosyllables. “All right then, 2 o’clock.” She stabbed the end button and said, “The lawyer.”

“Your mom’s lawyer?”

“Yeah. I’ve been dodging her calls all week. Seems Dad gave her my cell phone number.”

“He must have thought it was important.”

“He also knows I have no desire whatsoever to hear anything about Mom’s will.”

“I know that. But the woman is just trying to do her job. Isn’t she legally bound to do certain things to get the will probated?”

“Yes, and she also has to inform the heirs of the terms of the will.”

“So what’s happening at two o’clock?”

“We’re going to her office. It’s on Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda.”

Laura glanced at her watch. “We’ve got a couple of hours to kill. How about one of those cheese steaks you used to rave about?”

“You must have a strong mothering streak,” Connor smiled. “Whenever I’m stressed, you prescribe food.”

“Yes, but would a good mother prescribe a cheese steak sub, greasy chips and a large Dr. Pepper?”

“Probably not.”

“Good. Then once again I’ve proven I’m not perfect.”

“Perfect enough for me.” Connor took the exit ramp for the Capital Beltway toward Maryland. “Next stop, Philadelphia Mike’s.”
