Chapter 27

Monday Night

Morgan and Carter carried the dishes to the kitchen, where Morgan wrapped up the leftovers and put them in the fridge. Then they took their glasses of wine and went out on the deck. Morgan brought her legal pad and pencil with her. They sat down and continued their discussion.

“What about Jenny and Lars?” Morgan asked.

“They got married right after graduation. They met in that infamous biology class. They were lab partners along with me.”

“Why do you say infamous?”

“Didn’t I tell you about the lab experiments?”

Morgan frowned.

“We were working on this DNA experiment, doing research for Krishna and the professor. Remember I told you about Krishna?”

“Right,” Morgan said.

“Well, the experiment was tampered with. Someone destroyed the DNA samples we were working on. Krishna went nuts. It put his research way behind schedule. We all got a grade based on classwork and tests, but the lab work could not be evaluated. No big deal now, but it was at the time.”

Morgan sipped her wine. “What were Jenny and Lars like then?”

“Jenny was Miss Prim and Proper. She was a strict church-goer…no nonsense. Lars had a similar background, but he was testing the waters. He dated several girls, joined a fraternity, got drunk, smoked pot.”

“And he dated Victoria.”

“Yes, but not for long. You know, she made fun of him the other night at The Red Bar. She said he, well…” Carter paused and looked out at the expanse of water. “Well…that he couldn’t perform sexually. Jenny had been talking about trying to get pregnant. I guess it isn’t working.”

“Okay, I can see them getting angry and being embarrassed, but would that be a reason to kill Victoria? It seems far-fetched to me.” Morgan made notes beside Jenny and Lars’ names. “Didn’t Rex say this afternoon that Lars was a white supremacist? What do you think of that?”

“He did lead this march about white students’ rights, but I never saw him go after any minorities. I think it was more about the principle of the thing.”

Morgan pulled a footstool over and put up her bare feet. She looked out at the Gulf, where the moon had made a path of light across the water. It led right to them. “By the way, Jenny told me Victoria argued with her mother at the reception sometime before she died. I wonder what it was about?”

“Hey, how about we pay Mrs. Palmer a visit? Maybe we’d learn something,” Carter said.

“I’m game. Let’s go tomorrow.” Morgan was enjoying this detective shtick.

Carter slipped off his leather sandals and put his feet up on the footstool beside hers. “Do you mind?”

Morgan gave a low laugh. “No problem.” She took another sip of wine. She was enjoying Carter’s company. He had nice legs, well-muscled with tawny hair. His feet were even nice-looking. She smiled to herself. She’d better get back to concentrating on the murders.

“What about Jill?” she said.

“Oddly enough, she was in the biology class too. So was Rex. But they really weren’t part of our little gang.
