“It took several days, Marsha, but I finally duplicated the firefly for short-range missions. The atmosphere here won’t allow for radio transmissions, but I figured out a way for it to send short bursts of pictures that can show the layout of the Overlord’s fortress. Of course, I’ll have to be close to receive the transmissions.”

“Be careful, Tiago. You don’t want to get caught behind enemy lines. If there is a jump site inside unknown parts of the fortress, it might be a way for you to escape. We have to know if the crystals I described are in the fortress.”

“You still haven’t told me why you believe these crystals exist or why you want them.”

“Some things are best left unsaid. I told you, Tiago, you need to trust me. I can’t convey everything to you all at once in case someone is hacking into our communications. We both have to be careful.”

Tiago didn’t believe Marsha for one second, but he didn’t have a lot of options. Every attempt he’d made to get further into the sealed sections of the fortress had failed. Tiago had learned that there were certain hallways that even the A-Lords didn’t venture down.

And he was no closer to figuring out where Nhari used to go when she would disappear with Vigot for days at a time. He only knew that there was some sort of otherworldly door that was down a strangely dark path. One that even Nhari’s heightened senses couldn’t see inside.

If Tiago could get close enough, though, he could let the firefly drone survey some of those hallways if he remained close by to receive the images. But he would need Adul and the twins to assist him on this hunt.

Tiago found Adul in the lower lava tunnels, where many of the younger kids lived. It was the safest place for them, given its access to exit points if they were ever found by the demigods. Adul was completely blue in the face as his elemental tattoos roamed freely below the surface of his skin. Tiago could feel the cool water breezes coming off Adul’s body and cooling the entire length of the lava chamber as the children slept nearby. Despite his scrawny size, Adul was becoming a very powerful water elemental.

“Boy, you look like a life-sized air-conditioner!” Tiago laughed as he walked into the chamber.

Breaking his concentration, Adul splashed water on Tiago’s face. He laughed as Tiago tried to wipe it away, only to have Adul land another splash in his face. They laughed and roughhoused before Tiago quieted down.

“Adul, I need to figure out if there is another way out of the exiled realm in the fortress that no one has yet spoken about.”

“You really believe there is another exit in the fortress beside the known jump site? I’ve never heard of this before. Why do you believe this might be the case?”

“Until now, we’ve never thought about this possibility. With Nhari gone, we need to expand our ways of thinking creatively about getting out of here.
