Chapter 13

“It’s almost one,” I said. “Let’s track down DeeDee and see what she knows. I bet the big wedding that’s tonight has already started to arrive. So she should be there.”

“Unless Martha or Colton came and got her when the police arrived and she’s down at the main house.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think so. Martha probably told her to go on with the day like nothing was wrong. You got any binoculars in that overgrown purse of yours?”

Aunt Shirley patted her purple patent-leather purse that matched her purple polyester pants. “You know I do.”

“See if you can make out what’s going on at the main house,” I said. “Are cop cars still there? Let me get to this higher ground over here so you can see better.”

I pulled the golf cart to the highest level of ground I could find and waited as Aunt Shirley got out of the cart and zeroed in on the target. She scanned both the house and the old barn next to it. At that distance, I couldn’t really make anything out.

“I got zero sightings on any paddy wagons,” Aunt Shirley said.

I blew out a breath. “Think that means they found the twine?”

Aunt Shirley snorted. “They’d have to be blind not to find twine in that barn. Colton admitted he kept it there.”

“True.” I waited a second while she scanned some more. “Do you see Colton or Martha? Do you think they took Colton in for more questioning? After all, even though that twine was probably accessible to anyone, he’s the one that pretty much made the threat against Delores yesterday.”

“I don’t see any movement inside the house,” Aunt Shirley said, “but that doesn’t really mean anything. But I’d say chances are pretty high they took Colton in.”

“Please, please, please, please don’t let them close this place down and not let Mom get married here tomorrow.” I thought maybe throwing it out in the universe it might somehow help. “Get back in here and let’s go see if DeeDee is at the Old Red Barn and if she can talk.”

The Old Red Barn was hopping. Even though the wedding wasn’t until five, there were already at least fifteen people milling around outside…one of which was the bride. You couldn’t miss her, she was wearing a white knee-length dress that zipped all the way up and had the words “bride” blinged out in rhinestones across her chest. Plus, the elaborate updo atop her head didn’t hurt with the identification process, either.

In front of the Old Red Barn about twenty yards, four men were busy putting up a large portable wooden dance floor, while two more men set up lanterns around the outside of the floor.

“You!” Bridezilla said, pointing at me. “I still need my makeup carrying case out of the back of my car. I was told days ago there would be a man here to help transport items when I arrived, but I don’t see him anywhere. It’s the convertible BMW in the lot out back.
