Why focus on Ghana?
The unfortunate truth is that there are many developing countries, especially on the African continent; so why focus on Ghana? Ghana broke free from its British colonial rule and gained its independence in 1957; the first African nation to do so. Ghana benefits from a stable and robust democracy (BMZ 2010; Harvey 2010). A stable political environment allows for a more accurate portrayal and analysis of innovation and entrepreneurship by taking civil wars and absolute destitution, still common all over the African continent, out of the equation. The World Bank ranks Ghana as number 67 of 183 nations with regard to the ease with which business is conducted. Criteria include âstarting a businessâ and âregistering propertyâ, among others. In comparison, the United Kingdom is ranked fourth and Germany 22nd, losing ground mainly because of its bureaucracy and non-transparent tax structure. The Ivory Cost, Ghanaâs neighbour to the west, ranking at 169 and Togo to the east, at 160, are nearly at the bottom of the list, suggesting that Ghana is progressing in the right direction (World Bank 2010a, b, c, d, e). It appears more beneficial, in the name of progress, to focus on the obstacles specific to an advanced nation such as Ghana that seem to be hindering the move out of the developing world, rather than on the problems that less advanced countries like its neighbours face. If a nation like Ghana is successful in shedding its developing world status, other African nations can benefit through the knowledge that a path exists and that it has been taken once before.
