In the long version of the Longchen Nyingtik ngöndro, the mandala offering is followed by the offering of the simple beggar, or kusali offering. This is both a preparation for guru yoga, as well as a sort of inner mandala offering. The short ngöndro composed by Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo, on the other hand, is quite condensed and doesn’t contain this practice. For those doing the long ngöndro, the kusali practice is part of the liturgy and cannot be ignored, but even if you are using the short text, it is a good idea to integrate it into your practice. The kusali practice is an excellent method for accumulating merit, one of the best in fact; it is much better than the outer mandala offering. The kusali practice is a tsok, a fire puja, and also what we call “paying the karmic debt,” as is sur (smoke offering).
