Chapter Eight

Madison checked her reflection in the mirror for the third time. Her makeup was subtle; no one could accuse her of appearing plain, yet she didn’t think she looked made-up. She puckered her lips together to smooth out the faintly tinted lip-gloss she had applied. She wanted to make a good impression tonight and with another glance in the mirror, figured this was about as good as it would get for her.

Her mom had worried she had jumped too quickly into a new relationship and her friends were in awe that she had found someone else so fast. What none of them understood, because Madison had only discovered it herself the day she’d opened the text message and learned the truth about Darren’s infidelity, was that she had never been in a committed relationship. Yes, she and Darren had been technically engaged, but that’s all it was, a technicality. By the time they broke up, she hadn’t seen him in over ten months, and the few minutes they spent on the phone together each week was not time spent sharing endearments or dreaming of when they could be together again—at least not on Darren’s part, it wasn’t.

She stuffed her lipstick and a comb into her tiny purse. She refused to dwell on how naïve she had been while involved with Darren because it would only depress her, and she was determined not to let him, and his cheating ways, to have that type of control over her. As far as she was concerned, her ex–fiancé was simply that, an ex, and it didn’t matter if it had only been for six weeks or six years. He was out of her mind, heart, and life, for good.

Her cellphone buzzed, and she glanced down at the caller ID. It was Ariana, one of her two best friends and a fellow marine biologist. She quickly swiped the screen. “Hi!”

A smile found its way to Madison’s mouth as Ariana’s face filled the screen. Her friends loved to tease her about the freckles scattered across her nose and cheeks, easier to see with a cell phone zoomed in on her face. Ariana worked at a marine biology facility in California which focused on dolphin research, and she loved it. She was an avid surfer and preferred to be outdoors as much as possible.

“Hey, Mads. Willow’s on also.” As soon as the words were out of Ariana’s mouth, Willow’s face appeared on the screen, her green eyes glowing with merriment and her black hair, forever in a ponytail on the top of her head, filling up half of the screen. Willow was a computer programmer, spoke seven languages, and lived in Hawaii. Half South Korean and half Irish, Willow was as beautiful as she was smart.

“Hey, Madison!”

Madison went over to her bed and sat down, careful not to wrinkle her dress. “Okay, you two. What gives? I spoke to both of you yesterday in the department store dressing room. If you’re calling to make sure
