CHAPTER 11

No. Fuck no.

Zayn wanted to growl as he and Asher entered the bunkhouse to find Edrick there, sitting at the kitchen table, which unfortunately was visible from the front door, with Nole by his side. If it wasn’t for the fact that they weren’t alone, he probably would have ordered the alpha out of his house.

He wanted to claim his mate. The last thing he needed was to deal with an alpha who had threatened to send his mate packing once already.

But they weren’t alone. Because sitting there at the table with them was Chadwick, with a smirk on his face, telling Zayn he knew damn well this would be an inconvenient time to talk, and Saber. He was the one that Zayn wasn’t about to go against, even if it meant delaying the claiming of his mate.

Saber was one of the few people Zayn liked. He was a good alpha and an even better friend. Which meant, like it or not, Zayn would have no choice but to listen to whatever they were about to say.

“Looks like you two ran the whole way here,” Chadwick said with a huge grin. “Are you in a hurry for some reason?”

Zayn glared at him, and probably would have left it at that if he hadn’t seen his mate turn beet red at the comment. “Fuck off,” Zayn told him. It wasn’t the first time, nor would it be the last time he’d say those words to the man. Chadwick was someone who loved to tease, which, if it wasn’t for his past, probably wouldn’t have bothered Zayn much, especially since he knew there was never any maliciousness behind the words.

That made him different than the kids who had taunted Zayn in school, but it didn’t always make it any easier to endure.

“Kitten,” Saber warned. “What did I say about teasing Zayn?”

Chadwick cocked his head and tapped the tip of his finger against his pursed lips as if he were pondering his mate’s question. That caused Saber to chuckle, which, up until Zayn met Asher, always confused him. Chadwick was an ass on a good day, yet Saber tended to find his mate amusing instead of irritating, like everyone else.

Now that Zayn had spent the day with Asher, he completely understood. He was fairly certain there was nothing his mate could do that would ever aggravate him. The talking that everyone else seemed to avoid, Zayn only wanted to hear more. Even the way he rambled when nervous, spitting out whatever was on his mind, Zayn found adorable as hell.

“Why are you all here?” Zayn asked, even though he knew the reason. No way was Edrick going to sleep on a couch, away from his mate. Even if the alpha thought he was right, the idea of not having his mate in his arms would have been enough to convince him to apologize. At least, that’s what Zayn would have done.

He may not know what it felt like, yet, to hold Asher all night long, but his arms still ached at just the thought of not being able to.
