Sebastian

I veered off the main road that connected the two villages east and west of my house, and began the treacherous drive up the icy lane, the only way in and out to my home by car. Fresh snowfall had made driving even more hazardous, and despite the four-wheel drive SUV, and heavy-duty snow chains—a necessity in this part of Scotland in the depths of winter—a few times I almost lost control, and at one point I only narrowly avoided ending up in a ditch. I chuckled to myself at the thought of calling Jack and asking him for a tow. He’d play on that for years.

But the closer I edged toward home, the more the levity faded, and my mind turned once again to Trinity. For most of the morning, I’d thought of little else, shame at how I’d treated her last night churning in my gut. Yes, she’d kissed me first, but I’d chosen to up the stakes. Hers had been a brush of lips, a testing of the waters. I was the one who’d jumped in with both feet. I’d taken it up a level, hell, several levels, and then I’d surrendered to the guilt that had roared through me, and in the process, I’d hurt the woman I loved. I deserved a slap around the face for the metaphorical one I’d directed at her, yet she’d classily walked away. Her quiet acceptance of my harsh rejection had gnawed at me for the whole fucking night.

Even worse, I’d snuck downstairs this morning, grabbed a quick snack, and slunk out of the house under the bullshit excuse of needing better WiFi. There was nothing wrong with the internet connection at the house. There was, however, a fucking lot wrong with me. In a few months, I’d turn thirty-five years old, and yet I couldn’t find the balls to face up to a woman I’d hurt, a woman I happened to love, and tell her that as much as I wanted her, the guilt that I was stealing something that belonged to Declan refused to abate.

Stupid? Probably. But that was the unfortunate truth I had to live with.

Lost in my thoughts, as I approached the house, it took me a few seconds to grasp the scene I’d arrived home to. Blue flashing lights whirred atop the unmistakable yellow and green of an ambulance. My heart stuttered, then raced, adrenaline sending prickles through my body. I rammed my foot on the gas pedal, and the back of the car whipped out, snaking from left to right as the wheels fought for traction. I somehow made it the final hundred yards and slewed to a stop.

I thrust the door open and launched out of the car. My right foot slipped on a patch of ice. I grabbed on to the door to stop myself from falling, found my balance, then sprinted to the ambulance. The back doors were open, but inside was empty. I dashed into the house.

“Trinity!”

I found Jack sitting at my kitchen table, a gray pallor to his normally ruddy cheeks.
