Chapter 38
After Roo had settled into the guest room for the night, Enid called Josh. âHey, babe,â he answered. âGood to hear your voice.â
âCan you come over? Rooâs in the guest room, but we can talk on the porch. I guess I just need to see you.â
âI can be there in about an hour. That too late?â
âNo, Iâve got an article I can work on until then.â
About forty-five minutes later, Josh pulled into the driveway. Enid tapped on Rooâs door. âJosh and I will be outside. I wanted to let you know in case you heard voices.â
âDonât worry, Iâve gone deaf suddenly,â Roo called through the closed door. âI canât hear a thing youâre saying.â
Enid smiled. Roo was like the sister she had always wished she had. A little impetuous, but that was part of her charm. Enid opened the door and wrapped her arms around Josh. âOh, God, Iâve missed you so much.â
âIâve missed you, too. Come on, Iâve got a six pack of Coors in a cooler on the porch.â
âSounds good. Want me to bring anything to munch on?â
âNo, beer and you. Thatâs all I need right now, but not in that order.â
They settled into the two wicker chairs on the small porch. Josh pulled Enidâs chair as close to his as he could and then popped the lid of a beer and handed it to her. âI know beerâs not your favorite drink, but itâs all I had.â
She sipped the foam from the top of the can. âTonight, itâs perfect.â
Josh took a long drink and laid his head back in the rocker, closing his eyes.
âYou look tired. Is it the new job?â
Josh sat up and smiled. âMore like the new boss.â
Enid took Joshâs hand. âItâs me again, isnât it? Otherwise, youâd just brush it off.â
Josh pulled her hand up to his face and kissed it. âI have a feeling if it wasnât you, thereâd be something else.â He paused. âI may have made a mistake taking this job.â
âI suppose itâs too late to tell the governor youâve changed your mind. The last thing Iâd want to do is become a problem for your career, but if youâre not happy, you need to get out.â
âAnd do what? I donât think the acting sheriff will just move aside so I can go back to my old job.â Josh turned up his beer can and finished it off and then took another one from the cooler. âItâs at least a two-beer night. But Iâm tired of talking about my situation. Iâll figure it out. You sounded upset or worried when you called. Whatâs going on?â
She told Josh about Belinda and her and Rooâs conversation with Deputy Hyatt. âI know you canât get involved, but I just donât have a good feeling that the Bowman County sheriffâs office will make this a priority. Have you heard anything that would suggest Catherine could be a victim of a gang?â
âLarkin asked the same thing. My gut tells me no. When the first murder happened, that young man, he was left on full display.
