Chapter 11
Bastian took a deep breath as he approached Leightonâs room.
Why would someone kill Leighton? Was it because he happened to be a jerk to someone who had a short temper, at the time? Was he an ex of someone else on this train and said ex of his killed him?
He shuddered at that second question. He hoped it wasnât the latter, honestly. The last thing he needed was an ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend related murder.
Theories and questions floated in his mind as he took the key out from his pocket, looking around quickly to check for anyone that might see him. There was no one in the corridor, to his relief. He took a deep breath and slid the key card in the door. A soft âbeepâ sounded as he opened the door and entered the room, before closing and locking the door behind him.
The scent of drying blood invaded his nostrils, and he grimaced at the smell. The sooner he found anything that might show who killed Leighton, the better. The bed was perfectly made, save for some bloodstains on it from Leighton being murdered. Checking the small night table beside the bed, however, revealed some contents, a bottle of lube and a few packs of condoms.
Bastian wrinkled his nose at that. What was Leighton planning to do with those things? Have sex with his then-fiancée on the train, during their own engagement party? Bastian knew he should be the last one knocking on anyone trying to have their own kinky lives, but heâd prefer not learning about his late brotherâs potential sex life.
He closed the drawer quietly, looking around. Where would Leighton hide his most secret things? He brought something important on this bloody train, right? Itâs never like him to leave his work material at home, even for a few days.
Ever since they were young, he knew that Leighton was the workaholic, between the two of them. He was always so serious. He was the man with straight As in his studies, and Bastian knew he was mostly an average student (save for English, which did incredibly well at). They used to get along despite those differences, once.
Things changed, when they reached the end of high school. Bastian still remembered how his father explicitly forced him to go to university only for Business, just like his brother. Bastian worked his way around it by joining all the extracurriculars he could that werenât related to the Business program â the university orchestra, the literature clubs, and even the chess clubs. He hated his program, but he survived by making friends in the things he enjoyed. He even joined the LGBTQ+ alliance the university just started at the time, despite his fatherâs objections.
And then Bastian realized he was gay, came out to his family when he couldnât hide it anymore, and the rest was history. Bastian graduated, but his father forbade him from having any part in the family company and handed partial (and years later, complete) control over to Leighton only.
