CHAPTER
13
For all his curiosity about the sasquatch, Rhett still took his time with the chores outside. Bringing herds of unfamiliar horses together could be tricky, and it was a shame they only had one small, badly patched pen, which even now shuddered under the impact of lead mares and brassy stallions picking fights and testing each other. When theyâd found a place out west to start their cattle company, heâd make sure they had the proper amount of fencing and a lot less balls. Hell, maybe theyâd head back up to Las Moras and load all that lumber into the wagon. Not like anybody else was there to use it or would care to hunt down a fence thief.
Digby, at least, had gotten ahold of himself, and Dan had roped him and Revenge into helping him tow the dead bodies of Haskellâs men into a big pile and divest them of their useful effects. They were Rangers, and theyâd burn like Rangers. Looking at Haskellâs Rascals, Rhett just wanted to see the blight of Haskellâs taint gone off the world completely. Durango would be a better place without these fellers, that was for damn sure.
It was a shame how many horses had fallen in the fight, although Rhett was glad to see none of âem were full of arrows; probably Haskellâs fool men panicking and shooting wide. There were five dead mounts, beside Hess, and Rhettâs mouth twitched with frustration. These critters had had no quarrel, had just been doing their jobs, never knowing that the men they served were evil. And now they were lumps in the dust.
âMight as well butcher these fellers for winter, I reckon,â he said, and Dan nodded his agreement and went to fetch Samson, the big draft horse, to help him drag the carcasses into the barn and string âem up from the rafters, where wild things couldnât get at the ready meat.
Every job had willing hands doing work, and Rhett was heartened that they hadnât lost anybody. He knew already that the women inside were fine. But then he remembered â¦
âNotch and Beans?â he asked.
Every feller looked up and shrugged. Lizzie walked over, her face a mass of gore, and Rhett posed the same question.
âToo thin for my blood,â she said with a laugh. Being a Lobo seemed to improve her temperament quite a bit.
Which didnât help. Maybe it was part of being a captain, but Rhett wanted all of his men accounted for and wouldnât be able to relax until he knew everyoneâs fate. Once inside the mission, he found at least one thing he was looking for: William the Sasquatch. The big feller sat on the floor, hat in his lap, looking lost and resigned and as exhausted as Rhett felt.
âBill,â Rhett said, tipping his own hat.
âShadow,â Bill said, flapping his topper. âI did wonder what drew me back here, and how curious that it is you, my good sir.â
Rhett cut to the chase. âWhy were they chasing you?â
Billâs huge, reddish-brown shoulders heaved like boulders.
