9.1.1 Introduction to Monitoring and Measurement Systems

AMI is a complete network and system for measuring, collecting, storing, analysing and using information about users’ energy usage. It mainly includes intelligent energy meters, a communication network, a measurement data management system, etc. With the support of two-way measurement and two-way real-time communication technology, AMI can realize remote meter reading for various energy users, energy remote transmission, energy parameter monitoring and other functions and can support two-way interactions between the energy Internet and users [1].

In recent years, in response to increasing demand measurement management needs, AMI has also incorporated the content of home area networks (HANs), which consist of mass smart meters and network devices that connect them. These smart meters can achieve multiple metering and fixed metering intervals; they also have two-way communication functions and support remote setting, switching and disconnecting; bidirectional measurement; and timing or random measurement reading. Additionally, some smart meters can also serve as gateways to a user’s indoor network and customer portal, providing real-time energy prices and information to users. They will control the user’s indoor energy consumption device load to achieve the purpose of demand-side management. Because of the multi-metering with a timestamp, the smart meters are actually the system sensors and measuring points distributed in the network. Therefore, AMI can not only provide all kinds of energy enterprises with a communication network and facilities throughout the system but also provide an objective measurement of the system scope, which is the first step towards the Energy Internet. AMI can directly make users participate in a real-time energy market and can bring great benefits to system operation and asset management.

Comprehensive and accurate situational awareness is the basis of efficient management and dispatching of the Energy Internet. Compared with a smart grid, the Energy Internet needs to manage more forms of energy and a wider range of physical devices with finer granularity, higher frequency and higher requirements for plug and play. Therefore, more advanced intelligent sensing technology, advanced measurement sensors, communication technology, sensor network systems, related identification technology and measurement sensor technology standards need to be developed for the Energy Internet.
