I still kissed the back of her neck when we woke in the morning. She still reached for me in her sleep. She laughed. She sighed. She moaned. It was all the same.

Everything felt different. From the moment she wiggled her fingers free of mine that night in the car, everything felt off. There was only a slight tilt but I didn’t know how she could pretend she didn’t feel it. I didn’t know how it didn’t drive her insane.

We worked in her office. She tossed me my cell phone when it rang. I plugged in her laptop before it died. She grabbed lunch. I rubbed her feet while I obsessed over a company and what to do with it next. I took a walk around the block when I brought up my plans to look at houses and her only response was that she had to grab something from LeAndra’s office and she came back empty handed.

So that was what the desperate side of love felt like.

She sat down at her desk. All of the things she was working on were on the couch beside me.

“I’m looking at houses soon,” I said.

“I heard you the first time.”

I wished she weren’t so gentle when she spoke to me.

“Come with me.”

“I don’t need to go with you. It’s going to be your house.”

“You went with me to look at cars,” I said.

She grinned. “Are you going to buy me a house too?”

“I’m going to ask you to move in with me.” I swallowed. “I’m asking you to move in with me.”

“It doesn’t feel fast to you?”

“It feels inevitable. It feels like the next step.”

I couldn’t translate what ran across her face. It moved too quickly.

“I’ll have to think about it.”

I’d been a lawyer long enough to learn and recognize all the ways a person could say no.

I stood. “I’ve got a meeting at my office. I’ll see you tonight.”

“Okay.”

I might not have recognized what crossed her face but I knew what I heard in her voice: relief.
