The night before, Bliss and Chandler had each taken turns to grab some sleep while the other kept watch over the Paxtonsâ cottage. Other than Blissâs snoring and his partnerâs somnolent chatter and cute little chipmunk noises, the hours passed without incident. They left at dawn believing Molly was secure until nightfall. But Ryan Endicott had been busy. He was also proving to be unpredictable, striking during the day rather than waiting for the cover of darkness.
Mr and Mrs Paxton were both unharmed, but still in shock and visibly unnerved by the time Bliss and his DS arrived at the scene. As they sat at their breakfast bar, Lance Paxton described in a rush of words what had happened an hour ago.
It had all been over in less than a minute. A middle-aged woman dressed smartly in a navy-blue pin-striped business suit and carrying a clipboard had presented herself at their front door, which he had opened only after scrutinising her through the doorâs central glass panel. She flashed a warm smile and said sheâd like a word about plans for a proposed supermarket development. As he slipped off the security chain, the woman stepped aside and four masked men burst in. Each of them carried a large machete.
One of the figures rested a sharp steel edge against Paxtonâs throat and asked where the girl was, his request echoed by the large man who stood on the threshold, barring any bid to escape. When Lance tried telling them he had no idea who they were talking about, the blade had bitten into his neck and drawn a thin line across it. He admitted now that the warm trickle of blood had caused him to freeze.
By this time, one of the intruders had forced Abigail Paxton out of the kitchen, where she had been baking cupcakes, and dragged the terrified woman into the hallway to join her husband. One of the masked men spoke up, telling them that if either of them lied again the other would be badly wounded and permanently marked. The voice was raised this time; seconds later, Molly appeared at the top of the stairs.
âGet your fucking evil hands off them!â she roared, making her way down the staircase without taking her eyes off the figure holding Lance. âItâs me youâre after, you twisted fuck. Theyâve done nothing wrong.â
âAll we want is you,â the man said to her.
âIâll come with you. If you leave these people alone, I wonât even make a fuss.â
Lance Paxton related all this to Bliss, Chandler, DS Bishop and DC Ansari. He shook his head in wonder. âThat girl hardly knew us,â he said, his voice low and unsteady. His hands were still trembling. âAnd yet she gave herself up so that those men wouldnât hurt us. Can you imagineâ¦?â
âI can. That kid has spirit,â Bliss said. His heart went out to the girl, whose fate now lay beyond his control. The thought brought tension to every muscle. He felt hot blood rip through his head, causing an ache at the base of his skull.
