When the doorbell rang, Ju quickly ran over and opened the door. A white man stood on the porch, wearing an oversized suit, black wired glasses, and coffee-stained teeth.
âHello, is your mother available?â
âWho the fuck is that?â Randi yelled from behind.
With widened eyes, Ju looked back at her advancing toward them.
âWho the fuck are you?â she asked rudely.
âHi, my name is Brett, and I'm doing a survey in the neighborhood toââ
âGet your white ass off my porch. I ain't answering none of your fucking questions. Yâall always wanna come to the hood to do a got damn survey but donât bring no fucking resources. Fuck yâall.â
She slammed the door in his face, then turned to Ju with eyes so dark, his small heart thumped wildly.
âDid you answer my door?â
He looked at Omir who was seated on the couch. There was this look of worry deep in his orbs that alerted Ju trouble was set to come.
âMufucka, you donât hear me talking to you?â
âUh⦠yes,â he confirmed in a low voice.
Randi leaned down toward his face, bringing the pungent scent of alcohol with her. His aunt would be so beautiful if her spirit wasnât so rotten.
âWhat I tell you about opening my door?â
He swallowed hard as his eyes traveled back to Omir.
âDonât look at him.â Her voice was still in its lower register. âAnswer my question.â
âYou told me not to answer the door.â
A swift hand crashed into the side of his head. A pounding so fierce caused his eyes to water on impact. His lips opened to produce a gut-wrenching cry. There was a delay for a second before a loud wail blared from his lips.
âFuck is wrong with your begging ass? I told you if you do some more shit I didnât like that your ass was getting the fuck out my house.â
Ju was trapped between pain and distress as he hurried toward Omir for some comfort.
âOmir, donât baby that lilâ mufucka!â Randi fumed. âJu, since you like opening doors like you pay some bills, come to this kitchen.â
His loud sobs did nothing for Randi. She was so immune to their cries that she didnât bat an eye when she caused them pain. She snatched a huge pot from the cabinet. She then pushed Ju into the wall and forced the pot into his hands.
âHold this.â
With tears smearing his face and snot resting on his cupidâs bow, he held the pot. Randi turned the water on and filled a huge bowl. Once that was filled to capacity, she transferred it to the pot Ju was holding. It was so heavy that it weighed his skinny arms down.
âAht, Aht, you like to be big and grown, so hold this up and if you drop it, I'm taking you to the white people.â
âI'm sorry!â he cried.
âI donât give a fuck about you crying. Hold that shit up and the minute you drop it, I'm kicking your ass out.â
Ju whimpered as his arms trembled from holding the heavy pot of water. When he glanced at Omir, he knew his cousin wanted to save him.
