Luke and Kabelo combined to subdue the man, who did his best to wriggle away from their grip.
âEasy, brother, easy!â Kabelo said.
Attracted by the commotion, a waiter and the restaurant security man came up to them.
âWhatâs going on here?â the security man asked, his hand on the baton hanging from his waist belt.
âWeâve got it under control,â Luke said.
âWe donât want you to have it under control. You need to take it outside,â the security man replied.
Luke knew he had to de-escalate the situation. The restaurant had nothing to do with his quest, so he and Kabelo led the man outside. They led him to an empty street bench and sat him down, sandwiching him between them. Discreetly, they kept a hold on his arms to prevent him from escaping.
âWhy are you following me?â Luke asked.
âIâm not following you,â the man replied.
âThis isnât the time to try being smart. Remember, I chased you down the street a few days ago?â Luke said.
âI donât know what youâre talking about,â the man replied, straight-faced.
âDoes FZ Marketing ring a bell?â Luke asked.
The man shook his head.
âYou better start cooperating, wise guy. I know a little about the streets and I can tell youâre hiding something. Thatâs not the safe thing to do,â Kabelo warned.
âI have nothing to tell you,â the man said.
Lukeâs eyes narrowed. There was something about the manâs voice. Luke took out his mobile phone, scrolled for a few seconds, and dialled.
A phone rang with the ringtone of a bleating sheep. It came from inside the manâs trouser pocket. Luke lowered his phone as his eyes met the manâs shocked gaze.
âYouâre the guy who called asking for Victor. Well, itâs now time to tell me why you were looking for him.â Luke said.
The man inhaled. âOkay, youâve got me. First, I wasnât following you. I wanted to find Victor.â
âWhy did you want to find him?â Luke asked.
âI owe him some money,â the man replied.
Luke and Kabelo exchanged glances.
âMoney for what?â Kabelo asked.
âIt was a loan. Vic always gave me loans when I needed them,â the man replied.
âSo youâve been looking for him in order to pay him?â Luke asked.
The man nodded. âHe told me to look for him and make sure I find him. Or else.â
âOr else what?â Luke asked.
âOr else Iâd experience some pain,â the man said.
Luke raised a brow. âAre you talking about him hurting you?â
âYeah. I didnât want to face that again,â the man said.
âAgain?â Kabelo posed.
âHe sprained my arm last year, took a while to get it back right. Didnât want to guess what would happen this time,â the man said.
âWhatâs your name?â Luke asked.
âChris. Chris Bala.â
âChris, what was the money for?â Luke asked.
âGambling. Iâve lost some money to that,â Chris replied.
âAnd how long have you been doing this with Victor?â Luke queried.
âTwo and a half years now. Heâs really come through for me,â Chris said.
Lukeâs gaze drifted away to the street in front of him. He wasnât seeing the passing cars, for his mind replayed the
