“Jane,” Nico growled, “what are you doing in the bushes, spying on me?”

The girl glanced over at Phil. Her eyes flickered with some emotion that Phil couldn’t quite decipher, then looked back up at the baronet. “I wasn’t spying.”

“I told you not to come into the woods. You know that your were-wolf resembles the beast that killed—”

“We have to hunt, Sir Nicodemus,” interrupted the man who had been the brown and gray wolf. As a human he lacked most of his brownish coat, his hair almost purely gray. But his black eyes sparkled with the same thoughtful intelligence.

Phil dropped the stick from nerveless fingers. “Beatrice’s killer resembled a black wolf?”

Nico glanced at her. “A few villagers thought they saw a black wolf the night of the murder. It’s probably nothing more than rumor, but until we know for sure, I worry about Jane’s safety.”

Philomena swallowed, trying desperately not to look jealous over his concern for the other woman. But, botheration, he still lay on top of the girl and Jane seemed to be quite content with the position. Still, Phil gave Nico a look, raising her brow at him. He flushed and scrambled to his feet.

“Allow me to introduce myself,” the gray-haired man said, giving Phil a graceful bow. “I’m Sir Edgar Hexword of Hallows Hall.” He gestured toward the girl. “And this is my daughter, Jane. We are Nico’s pack.”

Phil absorbed that last statement with what she considered amazing alacrity. “How do you do? I’m Lady Philomena Radcliff—”

“The ghost-hunter,” Jane said. “I’ve been ever so excited to meet you. Nico said he would introduce us, but it’s been over a week and he still hasn’t come ’round.”

“Ha,” the baronet crowed. “So that’s why you were spying.”

“I wasn’t…oh, very well. I’ve never seen a ghost-hunter before and I didn’t know you’d be, well, doing what you were doing.”

Nico’s lip twitched. “If you hadn’t been spying, you wouldn’t have seen something inappropriate for little girls.”

Jane’s lower lip stuck out in an enticing pout and Phil revised her opinion. The girl wasn’t just beautiful; she was stunning. “Nico, you’re not that much older than I am. Quit treating me like a child.”

He glanced at Philomena, the gold sparkling in his brown eyes, reminding her of the conversation they’d once had. Phil smiled and a shiver of something passed between them. Jane felt it, because her brow lowered and she launched herself at Nico. “You’re worse than a big brother.”

She would have bowled over any ordinary man. But the baronet just caught her up in his arms and swung her around, making them both laugh. Phil’s chest twisted painfully at their easy camaraderie. How could she have allowed herself to get involved with such a young man? Jane would make him a much more suitable wife, and she could easily see that they were fond of each other. Jane might even already be in love with him. Phil’s relationship with Nico would only complicate things.

“Set me down.” Jane laughed, giving him a playful slap.
