CHAPTER THREE

Winnie was seated in front of the window of her apartment staring out at the wide expanse of the Atlantic Ocean to the south of Lekki Island, its waves gently coming to shore. She loved Lekki not because it was the abode of the nouveau riche, home to corporate moguls, celebrities and captains of industry, but because of its beauty and serenity. As an added benefit, she treasured the fact that her home was close to the Conservation Center with its lush collection of coconut trees and abundance of plants and animal life. She always felt safe and protected in Lekki away from the urban, crowded adventures on the mainland.

Lost in her thoughts, she didn’t hear David enter the room, dressed for a day of business in the financial district in his tailored dark suit and his imported Italian leather shoes.

“Earth to Winnie?”

She looked around, and her gaze didn’t waiver as she viewed him, tall, stately, and regal-looking with his dark chocolate skin and pearly white teeth, a pleasing contrast to his gorgeous brown eyes that twinkled as he smiled at her.

He was hers, she thought, all hers. She would never get enough of looking at him. His love was a blessing to her after the devastating loss of her parents and her brother in a motor vehicle accident two years ago.

“How are you feeling, Winnie? Better, I hope.”

He kissed her on the forehead and sat in the chair next to hers. She placed her teacup containing a concoction of herbs to settle her stomach and nerves on the table.

“I’m better, sweetheart.”

She smiled at him and pushed her thick, curly locks out of her face. She was tired but happy. She had examined her face in the mirror while dressing this morning and had been pleased that her skin was still smooth and sun-kissed, dewy fresh bronzed by years under the African sky despite the malaise from weeks of not feeling well.

“Why don’t you relax and take it easy today? I think all the preparations for the wedding festivities and the demands of your job have been too much. Now you’re preparing to entertain your cousins. I would’ve been happy to host them with you, but I need to leave the country on business for a few days. Besides, it’s not like you signed a contract or have a legal obligation to your distant cousins whom you didn’t know existed until over a year ago.”

“That’s not true. Everyone in the hip-hop community knows about Miles ‘Ari’ Moore. He’s an international superstar. I toured with him in Africa years ago, or Ari as he’s known in the business. I just didn’t know we were related. Miles and Bella are family, and I don’t want to disappoint them again. The truth is, I’m looking forward to this chance to record with him. His musicians and producers are some of the best in the business.”

“You’re retiring, Winnie, so … are you not feeling well because you’re getting the jitters about marrying me?
