Laervyen glared, fingers pressed savagely against rough bark, brows furrowing in malice. A hideous grin ravished his features; a dark tale twisted in mind

Undetected, he watched Amarya’s interaction with the human. He saw the way she looked at the fool, how she sported a wishful eye. Never had she given him such attention; never had she spoken so openly of her thoughts. Defy admonishment!

But this… man – he reveled in her fancy and knew it not! He had no idea the feelings Amarya expressed for him. Perhaps he realized his worthless hide!

Envy surged within Laervyen, and he ground his teeth. Rage inflamed him; it heated his core. He could hardly breathe. He needed an outlet - a way to release the pressure that consumed him. Gripping a dagger from the sole of his boot, Laervyen pulled the blade and jabbed it against his thigh, twisting the hilt until blood ran down his leg. He bared his teeth and grinned at the searing torrents of red. But he felt no pain - only a maddened relish.

How was this human different? What gave him light in Amarya’s eyes that she shared not also for him? Suspicion plagued Laervyen’s persistent thoughts. Waves of hatred rolled from his cringing flesh. Fuming, he could have shouted at their ignorant stupidity. But he fought against impulsive exposure and refrained from rising. He could not let Amarya know of his awareness – not yet. So simple it would be to ensnare the human in the dark, to follow his steps and end his petty existence! But Laervyen crouched, writhing inside. Where would the human’s death lead him but in circles? Did he expect Amarya to run to him, with Darrion dead, in tears and in need of comfort? No – fool! He must play on her emotions - manipulate her into accepting his arm. No blood need be spilled… not yet.

Laervyen narrowed his eyes and glared at Amarya’s back, a wicked grin haunting his impervious desire. She would have no choice but to accept him. In the end, he would rule as Androth’s king.
