Chapter 13

The television blared in Ron’s New Queen City Deli. I was busy at work, bussing tables, pouring coffee, and trying to lay low. After Rex had a hole blasted in his head, I had to make a run for it. Whatever lies the NQCPD had told SHOT wouldn’t have been enough to convince them someone else froze one of their guys and blew a hole in one of my “rivals.”

“Reports of widespread power outages late had much of the city in confusion,” The anchor announced. I looked at the middle-aged man with slick brown hair and grimaced, knowing what was coming up. “Coming up at seven. Could this "Emperor" be behind the power outages? Or perhaps other enhanced terrorist activities?”

I watched the news flip over to a fluff piece while I freshened up somebody's coffee. I racked my brains, trying to remember every detail of the assassin. It was someone with a plan. Someone who had information. Someone who—

“Whoa! Whoa! whoa!” The patron shouted, snapping me back to reality. I had nearly poured the coffee around on this dude's lap and straight into a lawsuit.

“Oh! Sorry, sir,” I laughed nervously. “J-just wanted to make sure you got every last drop.”

I put the coffee pot down and quickly wiped the tables around him.

“Good thing I liked my coffee black…” He muttered to himself.

I bowed and returned to work, cleaning out the freezer. The cold air allowed me to think for a minute and hide away from the monotony of work. Unfortunately, Mr. Reiley entered the freezer and pulled me aside. Mr. Reiley looked me up and down. He had the look of a concerned and confused father.

“You doing all right, son?” He put his arm around my shoulder when he asked the question. “You look a mess. You come in with bruises, gettin’ orders wrong... Ya almost boiled a man’s nuts in coffee!”

“Y-yeah,” I said, flinching from his arm around my shoulder. My shoulder stung like hell from the hard landing last night. “Sorry, boss. I’ll do better.”

He looked at me, unconvinced.

“Don't tell me you got mugged last night.”

“I put up a fair fight I think.”

“Ah, geez, kid.” He knocked me on the forehead a couple of times. "You get in a fight last night again? Ya got a good head on your shoulders, but that mouth’ll getcha in trouble, CJ”

I grimaced and nodded my head. Even before my powers manifested, I’d been working for Mr. Reiley for years out of the kindness of his heart. When I returned to New Queen City, he saw me walking down the street and refused to let me work anywhere other than for him.

“Listen, your mother was a beautiful woman and an absolute pillar of the community,” He stressed. A memory flashed before his eyes, and he smiled at me with his weathered face. “She was the only teacher to ever keep my kids in line, and she’d have you and all the other ragamuffins studying here in one of my booths. She’d hate to know you’re getting in trouble like this.
