Chapter 25 - Fine Dining

A knock came at Jonx’s dorm door on his last night at the Culinary academy. When he opened it, he was surprised to see his head instructor, Andalikka. Hastily bowing at the waist, he said, “Master Andalikka, I wasn’t expecting you.”

“May I come in, Jonx? Hmm?” his teacher asked.

“Of course, Master. Please,” Jonx waved to the empty chair as he took a seat on the bed.

Andalikka inspected her newest Expert as she sat down, then reflected, “You’ve graduated with a higher rank than I originally expected, Jonx. And I’m pleasantly surprised at your dedication to our craft. I can say that watching you grow this last year has been rewarding for me as an instructor. Your adaptation of your home world’s foods to our local ingredients has had some wonderful results. That being said, I’ve come to make two requests, if you’ll allow me.”

Jonx was taken aback, he hadn’t expected his Culinary Master to take a special interest in him after the graduation ceremony. He dipped his head in deference and said, “Sure, Master. What do you need?”

In a businesslike tone, she began, “First, I’d like to ask for several of your more promising recipes. I plan to put them on our menu at the restaurant on Imfaral. I will, of course, pay a fair price for them.”

He definitely wasn’t expecting that. He never realized that the comfort food he’d been trying to recreate would garner this type of attention. “Which ones would you like, Master? I wouldn’t dare take Gil from you. Not after you took me into your academy. Think of them as a parting gift.”

Sad to hear the last part, she commented, “Ah, so you are planning on leaving, hmm? I shouldn’t be surprised, but I was still going to offer you a place at the restaurant.”

Now that was even more shocking to him. He knew the bare minimum to be offered a position there was Expert rank, but he’d just barely made it by the skin of his teeth. The meal he’d made for his final exam was scarcely above 200% ether sat rate. He was literally the least qualified an Expert Culinarian could be. “Thank you for the offer, Master,” dipping his head respectfully, “I’m absolutely overwhelmed and honored that you would offer that to me, but I don’t think I deserve the position.”

Waving off his modesty, Andalikka said, “Your rank is only part of it. It was your commitment to your craft that makes you a prime candidate for the restaurant. But it doesn’t matter, does it? You implied that you were leaving.”

He abashedly scratched the back of his head, “Uh, ya, well, that is true, Master. My next goal is to either teleport off-world or find transportation off-world. Speaking of which…if you could point me in the right direction, I would be in your debt…”

The Master Culinarian laughed lightly as she shook her head, “That’s not even worth mentioning. I’ll gladly give the information for free. But
